I bought 2 items : cat food and some dessert cakes, and was in a bit of a hurry. The cashier had one of those remote barcode readers, and apparently pressed twice for the cat food (Purina, 18# bag) which I didn't notice when she rang me up. I just signed my name to the receipt and went on my way. When I got home, I noticed the overcharge, but what was I to do .. go back to the store carrying only one bag and say I was charged for two? It'd be their word against mine.

Moral: inspect the receipt before leaving the checkout area.

This Happens Everywhere

This sort of thing happens everywhere. No one should blame the cashier or the company. It is an honest mistake usually. Personally, I am totalling up my purchases in my head as I am shopping so that I know what the approximate total should be. This sends out a red flag to me if the total is more than a dollar off to check the receipt extra carefully. I do, however, ALWAYS check the receipt as I am walking to the door. On one occasion at a Kroger grocery store, I found several errors on the same receipt. They checked the errors and refunded my money. These errors were due to the price tags on the shelves being out dated. Most companies will happily do this even though the price charged was correct, simply because it's not the price you believed you were paying.

Target will refund

Target will refund your money for being over charged. The same thing happened to me-I was charged for two tanning lotions, when I only purchased one and of course, I did not notice until I got home. Target is 30 minutes from my home and I did not want to turn around and go back. I called the store and spoke with the manager (who was very friendly and apologetic). She told me just to bring in my receipt as soon as it was convenient for me to do so. I went back 3 days later and received a refund with their apologies. I realize that mistakes happen and I need to pay more attention as items are being rung up. Target is a great company-I have many friends that work for them and they could not be happier!

Actually Not Your Word Against Target's

I just wanted to let you know that it wouldn't just be your word against Target's. We have a process in place to handle that kind of situation. If you bring your receipt back to the store where you shopped within 90 days, assets protection can use the receipt ID to look up the computerized video tape from the register where you made your purchase to verify that you only purchased one bag of pet food, and then refund the difference for you.

Target Cashiers Care

Target cashiers are "fast, friendly, and fun." "Fast" means that we are timed on each transaction. We like to keep our percentage of "green" transactions (ones that keep within a certain allotted period) high. We have to balance that with "friendly and fun"; we've gotten a reputation for being chatty and unique (we were shown a video at training of some eccentric guys at a fish market, telling us we should all be weird and keep our "guests" entertained in the process of assisting them...) It's hard to do all that and still be accurate. But most of us, I swear, are conscientious and care. Heck, I always point out when a guest misses a coupon for a free item when purchasing another. (This week it was free Goldfish with an Aladdin DVD.) Others do too - I've heard them. We listen to the beeps. With one item, we may have to fight to get the barcode to scan and beep. With another, it may scan and beep twice as it passes, or scan as we lift it over the scanner, or scan despite being inside a bag. I've had the same shirt scan five times while I'm trying to remove the hanger. It happens. It's very easy to delete the charge. Two buttons. But it's hard to keep track of our own register's beeps when we're surrounded by other registers beeping as well. Believe me - your cashier does not get a bonus for charging you for extra items. Nor does he or she get a bonus for allowing you to walk away without a bagged item, your credit card from the reader, or even for getting you to sign up for a Target Visa. We want you to be happy, that's all. Pay attention as your order is scanned. Examine your receipt after you pay, before you leave. Make sure clearance items scan at the right discounted price. If there is a mistake, we will be happy to fix it. And your cashier may learn in the process how best to handle the merchandise around a scanner, how to listen for double beeps, spot duplicate charges. You'll be doing future guests a favor.

Sure. There really isn't any easy "fix"

Lourdes, There really isn't any easy "fix" to something like this. I agree, they probably would have removed the overcharge. What if you are buying 20 or 30 items? We can all try to watch as each item is rung up... But there is also trying to fill out the check as things are being rung up. There is also the other little distractions. I recently found out that the store where I do my grocery shopping is consistently rining up my sodas twice. I would buy 2 cases of sodas and when I looked up it was showing 3 cases. Fortunately it was one of those times where my number of purchaes was low enough that the $5 was noticed by me. I questioned the cashier about it and she took it off the total and shrugged her shoulders and said, "That always happens." My next time at the store I watched more carefully and sure enough... 2 cases of soda rang up as 3. This cashier also was not surprised. Whether it has to do with the speed they scan such a large and heavy product that makes it ring twice or whatever... it just does it. Now, I am not blaming the store or the cashier and saying that they are trying to "rip me off." What I do believe though, is that in a situation like this the cashiers should be aware and double check if they know there is a problem like this. The cashiers should make care that they hear one "ding" for one product swiped. Just a part of taking care of the consumer... which ultimately is the one paying their paycheck.

Its not Target's fault

Its not Target's fault that you were over-oharged. Look at it as an "operator error" and not as Target trying to rip you off. You as a consumer, are responsible for your purchases and if the charges are not what you expected, you should bring it up to their attention. You could have gone back and told them that you were over-charged and yes, they would have given you credit or your money back. Its very easy to make a mistake and those cashiers do not make "more money" for over-charging you.
