Tell us has your experience with this business or person been good? What's this?

I contacted Spartan Van Lines to make my move from Ashburn, VA to Port Richey, FL in may as I was retiring in June. Spoke with Juan the sales guy he was very nice and quoted me a price of $4683.22 I said that’s Great I had allocated $5000.00 for the move. The movers came on July 29, 2018 and put everything on the truck when done my price went up to $7000.00. I said I don’t have that they told me to call Susan in the morning because they work with people and could get me on a payment plan. Well to my surprise Susan says they don’t do that. I was given a delivery date of August 3. Still waiting for furniture delivery. Every time I call samething waiting for a truck. I’m 65 years old with arthritis in my back sleeping on an air mattress is killing my back they don’t care. I was told that I could pick up my furniture in PA if I can’t wait really. Also was told no one asked you to come with us and to make sure I pay the balance. They want full payment before they unload your furniture I. Postal Money Orders. I don’t want to pay until I make sure all my furniture is delivered and nothing missing. I have heard horror stories from this company. At my age I should not be stressed out as I am. This was supposed to be my happy time retirement. Get this company take them out of business so they will stop ripping hard working folks. Susan is very unprofessional as well as customer service.

You Fell For A Very Old Scam

#2Consumer Comment

And you probably found these guys on the internet.  That's where all moving scammers live.  What they did to you is not illegal and movers have Federal laws on the books to not only protect them, but allow this sort of scam to continue.  There are several legitimate movers in Virginia where you were that could have easily done your move.  They may be more expensive, but you end up only paying that amount.  No more.  You didn't need to find a mover in PA or FL or any other state to do your move.

Moving is not inexpensive.  Whatever you budgeted the move for...the cost is going to be higher.  Much higher.  I'm tempted to say you were fortunate the actual price of the move turned out to only be a little more than $2K more than what you were quoted.  Often, the quote is low-balled by a factor of maybe 2X or 3X what you were quoted.  However, I suspect you don't feel very fortunate at the moment.

they told me to call Susan in the morning because they work with people and could get me on a payment plan.  WOW!  That's one of the more unique comments I've ever heard a mover say.  No, movers don't have payment plans - not even legitimate movers like the ones you see on the highway.  The reason is that movers have their greatest leverage when they have possession of your items.  When they deliver your items, their leverage disappears.  Therefore, they need to collect everything before delivery.  That's why they said...  They want full payment before they unload your furniture.

I don’t want to pay until I make sure all my furniture is delivered and nothing missing.  It's in your Bill of Lading or your contract that requires full payment before delivery is made.  It is this way because the number of customers who won't pay upon delivery used to be staggering.  So the contract is written to make sure payment is received in the form of a money order before delivery is made.  Additionally, if there is damage identified during delivery, and there will be, you cannot file a claim for valuation until payment in full is made.

At my age I should not be stressed out as I am.  Moving is stressful - period.  It doesn't matter how old you are.  It helps to do your due diliegence before a move, rather than after a move.  You haven't really felt stress yet however - there will be much more to come when the goods are finally delivered.  Crushed boxes, chipped or broken furniture....filing claims...arguing that valuation should be more than $0.60 per pound as stated in your contract.  These are all still ahead of you.

I am sorry this happened to you.  Best of luck....
