I got my Playstation 3 in the beggining of 2008.  The machine worked real well and i was happy with the product until about August of 2008 when the machine wouldnot read disks anymore.  Sony warrantied the product and repaired the POS and gave me a 90 day warranty for th repair.  Today I turned on the machine after not using it for about 3 weeks and the machine will not read disks again.  Called Sony and they would not give me any information on what was wrong with the machine the first time so i could fix it myself and could not give me any information on what steps to take without sending it in to SONY to have them repair it.

I am not a serious gamer and do not use the playstation more than maybe once every two weeks at most.  The same thing happens with the machine twice, SONY does a piss poor job at fixing the initial issue with the machine so it occurs again.  Now SONY expects me to pay to have them F-up the console one more time.  I can honestly say that SONY turned into a crap company.  MY PS 2 still works perfectly fine, never had a problem.  Now in two years this POS breaks twice for the same thing.

PS3's just dropped to 299.00.  I can honestly say i will never buy another SONY product again.  The customer service is terrible and the management that i spoke t doesn't care one way or another about customer loyalty or product quality.  I strongly recommned to anyone  considering a PS3 for Christmas not to waste the money.  You will be very dissapointed.  The bluray disc is not worth it, especially with the newer higher quality DVD's.  SONY is the biggest waste of money ever!!!!!!

I too have been victim of sony ps3 issues. the other day i was playing a game online...then all of a sudden my game went to loading screen and jus kept loading loading loading..finally i took the disc out. when i reinserted the disc...the playstation would not read the disc...i took it out and tried 5 more games and nothing.  i tried movies.. cds everything and my ps3 will not read them. i then googled "playstation wont read disc" and got a bunch of hits that after the sony 3.30 MANDATORY UPDATE..there has been numerous accounts of ps3s not reading disc anymore. That night i went to a friends house and when i got there he said"dude im pissed" when i asked why he said" i downloaded the ps3 update not too long ago and now my ps3 wont read anything..not games ..dvds..nothin." i was shocked and told  him it happened to mine just hours ago.  I contacted sony..they ran me through a trouble shoot process and nothing workd. i was told i had to send in my system for 159 dollars plus a 20 dollar fee for a total of 179. This is crazy...ive got to pay 179 to fix a problem that they created...after already paying 500 to purchase it in the first place. long story short they had no other solution. i called again today and talk to a supervisor and she said that the update has nothing to do with the issue. she said "sir even tho it seems to be connected i can assure its just a coincidence". i replied "how come sony tvs and dvd players and all sony electronics last forever, but the one product that you update all the time with new software..only last a couple years..she got quiet. she then stated to me that sometimes electronics fail..and i replied " ur telling me that my 20 year old regular nintendo still works..but my 500 playstation is gona burn out in a couple years." she got quiet again and said" if the updates were causing this issue then we would have millions of calls and we dont..we ONLY have hundreds of calls about this issue. she basically read the "get the person off the phone script". Can we please start a movement..i want to get as many people as possible..make the biggest scene..go tv and youtube and make sony responisble. their product breaks without any faulty action from the consumer ..yet the consumer is responsible for repairing their update problems, or thier bad assembly. if they have any issues the repair should be free. paying 500 dollars should be your warranty...repair should be a free service. not 179 dollars when a brand new is 299 now. gather as many people as possible..pass this on. im going on youtube and spreading the word. email me at (((REDACTED)))

What's the latest system update that your PS3 has?

It's up to 3.01.

Try updating, and see if the same problem exists.

I agree that you defintitely have a lemon on your hands.  And I would expect Sony to make good on it.  It is very disheartening to hear about the trouble you have been through, and makes me think twice about Sony as well.  However, what on Earth are you talking about - newer, higher quality DVDs ??  There is NO SUCH THING !!  Blu-Ray discs ARE the higher quality.  DVDs are recorded at 480p resolution.  Blu-Rays are recorded at 1080p resolution.  There is nothing in between.  And Sony is definitely NOT the only company manufacturing Blu-Ray players.  In fact, you can pick one up for as little as $99 at the well-known W--M--- !  Anyway, good luck with your problems with Sony.....and remember, there is more than one company who's products you can purchase.
