Around a month back, I went to Shobha Fashions in Edison, NJ (near Apna Bazaar) to get my blouses stitched. The shop does not have an in-house tailor; instead they give the blouses to a person who apparently lives pretty far. Since this was my first time there, I planned on giving only just one blouse material. However, the owner there seemed very professional and friendly and she put me at ease.

So, I gave her everything I wanted to get done - 5 new blouses to stitch, 3 sarees to line and 2 blouses to alter. I also left a sample blouse with her for the exact measurements. I spent around 1 hour with her making sure she understands exactly how I want them stitched. She kept saying 'Don't worry. I have been doing this for over 9 years'.

She insisted that I pay her the entire amount (over $200) as cash advance. She said that she cannot accept credit cards due to her low profit margin - which was fine by me. She did not give us a receipt either, saying that it's a small shop and she will remember our faces. I didn't have any reason not to trust her as she seemed like a very honest person.

To my shock, when I return to collect the items after around 3 weeks, she says that I haven't paid her. I try to tell her that I have already paid and that there's absolutely no reason that I should lie. She starts yelling at me saying I cannot take my clothes unless I pay her. All the blouses belonged to sarees that were pretty expensive; one's I had picked up from India. After arguing with her for 45 minutes, I realize that this was not getting anywhere. I finally pay the entire amount again, collect my stuff and just got out of there. This time I made sure I paid it on my credit card.

It was only when I got home that I tried on my blouses. Every single one of them were stitched badly. They all were so different - some loose, some tight. I instantly burst out into tears. There's no way I could go back to that shop and complain about my ill-fitting clothes. I had been ripped off twice. I paid twice the money and I lost all my blouses too.

My advice to anyone planning to shop at Shobha Fashions (aka Shobha International) - DON'T!!
