To make a long story as short as possible..

I purchased bed spread set from Ross Stores for our new home that was being constructed at the time of purchase in 12/2003.

We finally moved into our home in January 2004, and after several months of waiting for house furniture, we received our furniture in July 2004. That is when I wanted to unpack all the bedding that I bought for such a good deal back in December 2003. Why unpack the bedding if I dont have the bed or furniture yet?

It turns out that the bedding I purchased from Ross in Fairfax, VA was missing 2 pillowcases. Of course, I could not find the receipt at the time. So I went back to Ross to ask if I could return the item for a refund. The store manager told me I could only get a refund for 1/2 of the price of which I paid... 24.99 vs 42.99. I asked to get a credit for the full amount, because that is what I paid. keep in mind that I did not have my receipt at the time.

I told the manager I would go home and find my receipt and bring it back and that I was not lying. All she had to do was give me a credit, refund, or let me exchange the item. She refused... after much debating, she called me a thief and told me that I bought the item last week when it cost 24.99 and I was trying to "rip off" the store. After much debating, she called the police.

The police came and threatened to handcuff me and take me to jail... I performed no crime...all I really wanted was at least an exchange for a same priced item if they did not have the original item in stock anymore.

I am really upset, because they (Ross, Fairfax County Police) questioned my integrity. They called me a thief, they threatened to arrest me. They made me feel like an ant. Poor and uneducated. I have a 4 year degree from GMU, I have never lied, cheated or stolen. I have no criminal background. Why would they be unfair to me. Especially the police?

Well, I have the receipt from both my credit card, and the store receipt at home now, but now I cant go back to the store and return or exchange the item, because the store manager has called me a thief and threatened me.

I dont know what else to do.

??? There is more to this story for one thing. Seriously if you couldn't keep your composure for - at most - ten minutes in line, then I suggest maybe you need some fresh air and exercise. But it sounds like you have much deeper issues at hand, that xanax and fluphenazine may take care of... For another, I worked in retail for a few years and we could lose our job if we said anything to the customer. Such as "please stay out of another customers business". The things that I saw customers do and say drove me to find work in other areas.

I will never shop In this store again

I will never shop In a ross dress for less store again.  This problem happened In 2003.  I was taking things back,  I had previously bought.   This black customer that she was going to make this her business.

She rudely told me that was already taken against my checking account,  I just ignored her.   Then the black customer but her purse on the checkout table the cashier was black to,  she was saying nothing to the out of control black person.

I was busy with my business,  she had no right to say anything to me.  Other customers came to my defense,  & said she started It.  But the black cashiers wasn't doing anything,  or calling the manager.

Then she said lets take this outside,  I continued to ignore her.  The more I ignored her,  the more harassing she was.   Of course the assistance manager,  & the other customers who was witnesses who said the black customer started the confrontation.

Wouldn't do anything about It,  so that let me to believe she was racist to.  Towards whites.   Customers have no right to mess with other customers,  business.  But black people think they have the right to harass complete strangers.

If I had my time I would had knocked,  her black a*s on the ground.  The asstiance manager was a b***h.   They are all assholes.

I was minding my own business not bothering anyone.   What people get away with these days Is amazing.

Ross discounts their items based on the length of time since they were first entered into the system and shipped to that particular store. If an item is returned that is past the 30-day refund limit, a credit voucher will be issued. The voucher amount will equal the CURRENT SELLING PRICE. In this situation, considering the length of time elapsed, any item, no matter the price, will have been discounted so many times that it would hit the store minimum 0.49 cents. So, even if the store had issued the voucher, it wouldn't have done much good. Hope that helps- ROSS

Ross Return Policies

#7UPDATE Employee

Mon, October 04, 2004

I am a current Ross employee and our district's trainer for the return software used nationwide. I would like to explain that the computer program Ross uses for return verification is programmed to respond using the input received from the associate entering your return information. As you didn't have a receipt when you first returned the bedding, you were offered a store credit or exchange at the item's current selling price. (This policy is clearly printed on the back of all receipts, as well at on the counter top in customer service where all returns must be processed.) Ross Dress for Less is a discount retailer, and this "return at the lowest selling price" is standard policy at nearly all regular department stores as well. I am very sorry that you had a bad experience shopping at Ross Dress for Less. It's unfortunate that our associate and/or supervisors were unable to explain policy to you in a non-acusatory way, informative way.

Sorry to hear about how you were treated. If the police were called there may have been more to your story than is posted. You bought the bed spread set in Dec 03, for a new house that you moved into in Jan of 04, for furniture you didn't get until July of 04, 8 months later. What did you sleep on for those 8 months? I'm sorry but it doesn't add up. Many stores have policies that only give refunds at the last, lowest price. Otherwise someone could buy 2 items at different times, use 1 until it goes on sale then buy another at the lower price and return the new one with the higher priced receipt. I buy my bathing suits at the end of the season when they have them on sale at 75%-90% off in Nov. for the next year. Some of these policies are in place because some people abused them. Some good people suffer for the wrongs of others. Try having your husband or a friend take the items back.
