I have a company toll tag on my vehicle that is paid every month.  I received an outstanding toll letter from the Central Texas Regional Mobility Authority recently for a non payment of a toll.  I was concerend so I asked the office manager at my place of employment if they did not pay some of my toll fees, which I was told no.  All toll fees were paid.  With concern I contacted the CTRMA office in Austin, TX.

The toll was for $1.50 for the toll, $1.00 processing fee and $15.00 1st non payment fee.  I called CTRMA but nobody was available so I chose to leave my number and have a representative call me back.  When I recieved a call back, the person on the line started saying they were with some company I had no clue about who they were.  Long story short, he wasn't making any sense so I asked why he was calling and was told he was returning my call about a toll fee.

I began explaining to him that I recieved a letter in the mail for an outstanding toll, but that I had a toll tag and wondered why I was receiving the letter.  He asked me for my address, which I was reluctant to give him, so he read off the numbers to my address and asked me to give him the name of the street so I did.  After looking up the letter, he told me the letter had been sent out in error and I should be receiving a letter telling me to disreguard the letter about the outstanding toll.  He also said he showed I did in fact have a toll tag.

I asked him to send me an email saying to disregard the letter which responded that I could log into the system and it would pull up a zero balance.  I again asked him to send me confirmation on his statements which he declined and said he could not.

The question I have is if he was legitimate, how did he confirm/know I had a toll tag?  The address he asked me to tell him the street name of was my residence.  My toll tag is in my company name with a different address.  The vehicle is registered in a different address than both of them.

I think I stumbled upon a scam that is happening to people in Texas by either CTRMA or a group of individuals who have been able to hack into their system.  As soon as he looked up the information he started stuttering saying to disreguard the letter and that I could log into the CTRMA system and it would show I had a zero balance and no outstanding fees due.

I did not pay the fee.
