Tell us has your experience with this business or person been good? What's this?
I was ripped off by Retriever Towing #71. I did not receive any receipt after the tower traumatized me and my six year old granddaughter and two other concerned citizen's. It was really a mess and should be reported how this person's behavior was so unethical that the company needs to be held accounted. This type of behavior must be outlawed. I'm referring to predatory towing.

At approximately 8:45am this very cold, rainy morning. I was victimized by Retriever Towing on SE 90th & Powell. He swooped in to snatch my sister's truck as quick as a shark in an eating frenzy. A witness there said he almost hit my granddaugter the way he pulled in. In seconds, the truck was jacked and he jumps out his first word's to me, "I want one hundred bucks to drop it. Cash or credit card."

I told him I don't have it and he just blew me off assuming that I was lying. I tried to explain to him that I was there to buy an 8$ tree but he insisted I was lying. "Don't try to tell me you don't have a credit card when you're here buying a tree!" I tried to tell him that I am a student at PSU and raising my grandchild and do not have the hundred to pay for the drop fee.

There are no apparent signs saying DO NOT PARK HERE. THere wasn't any traffic at all on this DEAD END road and the tree lot was just opening. We were the only ones around. I assume this is a regular spot for him. He appeared angry at the tree lot owners and just with his tone of voice, posture, and the fact that he is a huge guy, his demeaner terrorized my granddaughter, because she couldn't understand what was going on. She was frightened. He was so willing to leave us there in the cold and rain. The grinch is heartless.

THe tree lot owners confirmed it is a private road but that there are no visible signs and no owner has ever come forward to claim this as a private road. He was ticket for $100 by them hisself. He blames MacDonald for allowing this to continue.

Apparently, according to the tower, a very small private property sign is posted on the OTHER side of the road. Not visibly posted. THere are no signs indicating No Parking at this spot where I was jacked up. NONE-No VISIBLE signs at all. He knows that and so do all other three witnesses to this mornings drama..

All this person had on his mind was getting paid for what he was doing. He was insistant on the fact that because I had a pick up I must have a credit card to pay his $100 drop fee. Unfortunately, I do not have a credit card and the pick up was on loan from my sister who, out of the kindness of her heart, loaned it to us for this particular reason-to get a christmas tree.

I went to this particular tree lot because it advertised $8.00 trees and I really thought it was going to be a great memory for my grandchild to pick one out together. It's supposed to be a great time. Now because of this heartless grinch who said, "You're lucky, I'm giving you a break! Because of your kid-I want you to know that." Because he was only able to get 40$ from me instead of $100. I never got a receipt, he took off after he dropped the truck. Everyone says he jacked me and pocketed it. I don't know, I don't doubt it though. I'm lodging the complaint.

The behavior and personality that this type of job requires does not seem to require any ethics. I wonder how anyone can live with themselves knowing the anguish they cause. Yes, I cried and was emotional, but, what was supposed to be a great memory turned out so bad for a small child. I am angry with you about that GRinch, you stole a piece of my grandchild's innocence today and now she says she does not like tow truck drivers!

So, not only did the grinch take money I could use for christmas, but my granddaughter is forever traumatized by this event and there are 3 witnesses to prove it.

Merry christmas to you grinch! I know, "you're just doing your job."

Retrieval Towing Was Fired From Our Complex

#2Consumer Comment

Retrieval towing actually put the owner of the apartment complex in legal troubles. The drivers were using the contract with them to abuse tenants who lived in the complex.

This company was just hired to tow cars from the complex WHEN CALLED by the manager only.

But, Retrieval would sneak around the wee hours of the morning, looking for easy targets in the parking lot.

Various tenants started to sue (and not in small claims court either) the complex owners for the violations against them when there cars were towed. One guy had his rental car towed, another his brand new car towed, and a third his second car towed!

The owner became so angry at Retrieval, she ripped their signs off the posted areas herself!

Ok first off I would like to clear up something about the truck number and the road that you were towed from.

Retriever Towing only has truck numbers ranging from 91-99 and truck 100 for medium duty use.

The street you were towed from because I know the exact location. since I myself have towed vehicles for the same reason from that particular street, is not a dead end. There is no parking on the whole street, regardless wether you saw the sign, it was posted.

I am trying to be considerate and let you know that the truck was truck #91 which is driven by intial J.B. and he has done this to many other people on numerous occasions, I have witnessed his behavior in person and as a fellow co-worker had him treat me similiarly.

I know that he pocketed your 40.00 for the simple fact that if he had been able to cut you a deal he still would have had to provide you with a receipt of such transaction. He also would have had to clear the deal with Chuck (the manager of retriever), has to report the drop to the tow desk (the city of portland), and has to have your information on the invoice which then becomes your receipt. TO MAKE IT A LEGAL DROP OR TOW on that street in particular, the driver of the truck needs to have the vehicle in the air on the stinger with a strap over one tire of the vehicle being towed. ALSO the driver has to call tow desk BEFORE he can touch your vehicle.

I think that it would be in your best interest to contact the towing coordinator of the city of Portland, which retriever towing can provide you the number to reach her, or you can do a internet search for the towing coordinator for portland and its listed there in the results as well.

I am truly sorry that your grand child wasnt being supervised enough to almost get hit by a tow truck as they are very heavy trucks and could kill someone if they hit them, especially a small child. You really shouldnt let your child wander so close to a road without you right there since you stated that 3 other people TOLD you that the driver almost hit your grandchild.

I think that what he did was immoral, greedy, and he should have either charged you the 100 to drop it and do it legally or just let it go all together. If you look at it this way he did you a favor in the end because he could have taken the car and charged you upwards of 315 since you couldnt afford the 100 drop fee had he done it all legally but since he was a greedy jerk he decided to get what he could, rip off not only you but retriever and pocket your 40.00 that he didnt deserve. His commission on the drop would have only been a small portion...27.00 of the 100 was rightfully owed to the driver had he done it legally with all the proper laws and procedures in place. Since he chose himself over everyone else *BIG SHOCK*( this happens more than anyone knows about) he ruined your family outing and took what money could have been spent for Im sure much better things than his dog.

I feel for you and since he did what he did if you have witnesses that saw the cash exchange take place, REPORT it. Dont let this driver get away with this. He is ruthless and is one of the many that give Retriever a BAD NAME!!

I hope this information is usefull to you. Sorry it came so late. I hope this Christmas for you and your grandchild is a much happier memory.

MERRY CHRISTMAS J.B. hope this helps you get fired!!
