I've had RCN for about 4 years without a cable box. Their cable line was servicing all 3 of my televisions and I was happy with the basic cable which included Lifetime, SciFi, 2 religious stations, Discovery, History and all these type of educational programming. They forced us to get the 3 digital boxes in October 2008, stating that if we did not get them, we would be out of our cable network. The landlord of my building will not allow any of us to choose what telelvison service we wish. It is either RCN or Time Warner and this landlord will not allow any sattelite equipment to be placed outside the building or on the roof either. I went with RCN because of the cable line without a box because I don't care about the premium movie channels, BUT ever since we got rooked into it from October 2008, not only is it costing us more, but they said we were going to get extra channels, like Hallmark, Sundance and Encore (all the channels in blue). This never happened. In fact, Hallmark has taken all the loved shows we used to watch on TVland and the Golden Girls from Lifetime. The only extra channels RCN gave us are the one's nobody in my house watch. e.g., "Yes"- and I hardly listen to the music channels. Furthermore, RCN said that we would not only get Basic Cable but also "Signaure Cable" included. I see a $15 charge for basic and $48.44 for "Signature Cable tv" , but I surely am not getting any of my former beloved shows and when I inquired, RCN said I would have to pay extra for all the above (without HBO, etc.) so that they now offer you less for the more money they charge. Furthermore, they specifically had said back in October, that I would not have to be charged for 1 box because it was being "forced" on me, yet I am still being billed for all 3. I hate them now and see their greediness as going too far and I feel this landlord of my buidling is like a dictator. After all, even though I am only renting, there are other tenants that are co-op owners who still have the same choice: either RCN or Time Warner. In any case, since I have to pay more, then I'm checking out Time Warner and so far, I see online their blue channel lineup includes all I want. My thought is if I have to pay more, I am not going to pay it to RCN out of principle. Let's see if I get Time Warner after I find out the cost and if I can afford it. But my love for RCN is now over.

If you think that's bad, how about being charged not only for the extra boxes, I have 6, but being double charged every month and with fees tacked on to that! I was always one month behind on my bill because they told me I was getting 3 months free if I switched from my current provider and after much yelling and screaming on the phone I ended up with 2 free months. Once that was over, here comes the cable boxes. Now after they gave us the cable boxes they want to not only have service problems leaving me with nothing but channel 4 and a classical music channel for days but they charge me $400/month but even after I paid the $400 last month, they want to charge me another $400 this month, swear up and down I didn't pay last month and threaten to shut my service off all while again they lost signal and again I have channel 4 and a classical music channel. This is ridiculous and it stinks because they are the only ones in the area with 2 way cable modem. Oh well, bye bye fast internet, RCN I am done for life and you can stick your cable service where the sun don't shine.

I was so unhappy. Right after I reported my report on them, I checked out Time Warner and they indeed said they could give me all I wanted from the blue list (which excludes the HBO's and Cinemax's, etc.) for $77. I was really upset that Time Warner would give me what RCN has not for the $77 I've been paying to RCN. The switchover would not be a big deal. So I called RCN and spoke to a Joanne there. At first, it came across I was not a call she wanted as the sound of her voice went down a level. BUT, after I told her about Time Warner and how unhappy I was because I was paying for junk that I don't watch and all I've been used to seeing went to Hallmark; also reminding her that I was told I would get Hallmark, the Encore movies and Sundance and that they would be "adding" new channels but all I'm experiencing is a "taking away from me" - she went to work. I could not believe how she went to work and got me a sweet deal of all the blue categories and said because I've been a long term member, I got it for $72. I could not believe my ears on this outcome. Anyway, I am happy and I got all the aforesaid channels immediately after I spoke to her and my husband too is now rejoicing. I thank God and whatever else, if anything else, caused her to give me that deal! Carla, Flushing, NY
