In May or June 2001, I paid for a Caribbean Cruise promotion thing from Ramada Plaza Suites ... this was a husband-wife deal. We wanted to go on the cruise July 2001 and the woman discouraged me telling me that it was too hot in the summer. So we figured we would go later in the year! After 9-11 we were apprehensive to fly so we put it off for a while.

Then my husband got ill and was hospitalized, operated on and subsequently passed away in June 2002. I wrote a letter to the the Ramada Corp. (see letter below)

In this letter I sent my husband's death certificate and requested a refund of the $698.00 I had paid. Today (9/16/02) I received a call from them telling me that they will NOT honor my request and not only that, they will graciously extend my option for this trip and they will then bill me $198.00 MORE!!!!

I told them that I had no intentions of traveling in the near future and that this was a trip that was planned for my husband and me and I simply could not even think of taking this trip now or ever.

The girl told me that there was nothing I could do. Now I am asking you, since I charged it on my Discover card, am I truly responsible for it since my husband passed away?

And also because I never received anything for my money? I always thought death was a good reason to cancel.

I am sending you the letter I sent to Ramada ...

Sincerely,

Re: Reservation # EI052101-056TT

Dear Tom,

Thank you for your kind words on the phone today. I appreciate them more than you know. It's nice to find someone with compassion these days.

As I said, Bill and I were looking forward to this trip very much. I had called earlier this year to make sure I had all the information because we were looking to travel after the summer. However, Bill had surgery in May and somehow there were complications and he passed away early Monday morning, June 3rd. Needless to say, my "happily ever after" ended then and there for me.

I am enclosing our marriage certificate and his death certificate. This is ascertain our marriage as I kept my former name for my job at the Board of Education.

I am hoping you will show commiseration and humanity, and in all goodwill refund me the $698.00 I originally paid. I find that the expenses recently incurred are more than I thought.

I truly appreciate your kindness in this matter.

Sincerely,

biggest run around at the worst time of my life

After the biggest run around at the worst time of my life (my husband's death, 6/2002), I did get my refund .... I had written letters to the Attorney General; Mark Spitzer in NY, Charles H Bronson, Commissioner of Division of Consumer Services in FL, Mr Lambert - VP Ramada Plaza Reorts in FL, and my credit card company. Within 45 days I got my refund. The way this company treats people, I am surprised it is still in business. Do NOT let them get away with it. Fight back. And remember that if it sounds too good to be true, it usually is a scam of some sort. And even if they tell you about the timeshare seminar ... they say 90 minutes ... but it is 4 hours and then 2 more to check out that you indeed did do what they wanted you to or else, everything gets charged to your credit card. (Yes, I did get stuck on one in Williamsburg, PA ... 6 hours of my life that I will never get back 8/2001)

You can read my "hell" with this so-called company, Ramada Plaza Resorts (last updated 3/21/02) Here is what I did: I sent the lengthy ripoff report to my Attny General Richard Blumenthal (from Connecticut) and the Commissioner of the Florida Department of Consumer Services Mr Charles H Bronson and, of course, Ramada Plaza Resorts. I did get $1200 which is better than nothing!!! They refunded me the initial trip charges of $598 per person. I am thrilled and wanted to share the information with you all and hopefully you can have the same luck I did. Hey - I got this all done within a MONTH! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Florida Department of Agriculture & Consumer Services Charles H Bronson, Commissioner Division of Consumer Services 407 S Calhoun St Tallahassee, Florida 32399-0800 1-800-HELP-FLA www.800helpusa.com ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Ramada Plaza Resorts 2419 E Commecrcial Blvd Fort Lauderdale FL 33308 telephone: 954-630-9449 Leslie Maynard - Compliance Department Manager Gina Johns - Admin Asst to VP Mr Lambert - VP Ramada Plaza Reorts Mr Lambert's personal fax: 954-331-4180 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Don't give up! I returned from this hell trip (yes, I actually WENT) on February 16th and had a refund by March 11th!! Good luck!
