I answered an ad in our local paper for "Office Work". That's all it said, with a phone number. I suppose that should have been a giveaway, but I didn't think it through. And, it was a little strange that the person on the other end of the phone said he was "screening" people for a friend. He asked me if I had experience and if I could manage and office.

The answer was yes to both, so I left my name and phone number. Got a call back from the "friend" (lets call him Fred) and set up an appointment.

Vague is the best word to describe the process. I was told all about the company and their services. I was told they're expanding and need "mid level managers". Unfortunately, I was NOT told what the job was. However, as one of the chosen few, I was invited back this morning for a follow up interview, which was actually nothing more than an indoctrination meeting.

It went like this:

An over view of the company.

The concepts of the company. (Debt reduction and financial independence for the clients.)

The compensation. This boiled down to being able to make very, very little actually doing the work, but "high six figures" if you reach the VP level and have many "managers" under you. Part of the carrot and stick routine was the emphasis on the "expansion" bonuses. If a Senior VP promotes someone to Regional VP status, that SVP gets $50,000 to $70,000 per year. That was called "support".

The very best part, though, was the cost for training. I didn't stay long enough to find out which credit cards they take for that. AND the offer of a "free" finanacial analysis!

I was applying for a job as an office manager. The company falsely represented itself.
