It's not Petsmart's fault your dog got kennel cough. I used to work in a kennel, a privately owned operation capable of holding 55 dogs at a time, tops. All the runs in this kennel were disinfected daily, and the food and water buckets were cleaned and disinfected between dogs. I know no one slacked off at this job because there were only two employees that did it- me and the owner of the kennel. We still had dogs go home with kennel cough. It spreads through the air like a cold. If your kid came home from school with the flu, would the school have ripped you off? Would you expect the school to pay your doctor's bills? Here's the thing about being 'forced' to come up with 500$ in medical bills: Med bills are expensive! No matter what species you're taking to the doctor, that doctor will be expensive. If you don't fancy paying medical bills, get yourself a pet rock. I hear they're quite hardy.

I am sorry, but getting the bordetella vaccine is a lot like getting a flu shot. It doesn't necessarily guarantee against getting kennel cough, but greatly decreases the chances of it.

Banfield's DOES have a vaccine warranty if you look at the bottom portion of your invoice. It may be full of loopholes, but it's worth a look-over. Also, a letter to corporate headquarters may also be useful. Also, while they can recommend all of the tests available, you are free to decline any or all of them at any time. There will be a notation made in the medical records that certain tests were declined.

I haven't had the best experiences at Petsmart either. It's odd how people (even the Banfield doctor) can be so nice in the beginning, but when there is a complaint or other problems that need to be questioned, they become so agitated and become a whole new different person (and not in a good way). Hearing that your dog contracted kennel cough (from the Petsmart grooming facility) and "you" had to pay for all the treatments/exams/etc, is just outrageous. Shouldn't "they" be the ones paying for the treatment of your dog? They should be apologizing. Dianara, I honestly hope that you find another vet/animal hospital that respects the owner and their dog (and is not only looking to gain the pet owners money). And best of wishes finding another groomer/grooming facility, where they actually clean the place and keep their facility free of illness and disease.
