hired a handy-man service to install inter-locking wood plank flooring in my condo as well as tile a small bathroom and replace sink and toilet. after a thorough review of materials and inspection of condo, i was quoted $2000 plus materials, half of which i paid up front with a check. no contract was ever signed. i gave "wayne" a key to my home so he'd have 24-hour access and moved myself and my cat out to a friends house.

his son, who was actually doing the work, didn't showed up at my home for the first five days because of an illness that i was not informed of until i inquired. after nineteen days, my house only had the wood flooring almost finished. i asked why this was taking so long and never received an answer. i asked him to leave and he tried to sue me in small claims court for the other half of the money plus additional costs for which he had receipts for only $300. i counter-sued for the damages due to improper installation, i.e., several "soft-spots" in the wood throughout the condo due to the floor not being even for which he was responsible for before installation. there is a four-foot scratch horizontal to the planks, hollow tile in front of the fireplace which will eventually crack. and not using a jamb saw for door jambs therefore cutting wood unevenly around the door and using a matching caulk to attempt to hide the mistake. he bought and installed PERGO quarter round instead of the natural quarter which goes with the BRUCE flooring. (doesn't match and twice the price)

in arizona, it is a class-one misdemeanor to offer services such as these amounting to over $750 without having a contractors license. in the thirty minute court hearing, "wayne" lied outright with a completely different story therefore i spent most of my time giving the judge the complete version. he gave this song and dance about being disabled and that he couldn't do the work, yet he was there every day with his son working. wayne admitted to me that his son hadn't done a complete days work at my house since he started. i submitted photos of damage as well as repair estimates ranging from $7500 to $14,000 from licensed contractors. they recommended redoing the floor because of the poor workmanship. the judge DISMISSED the case, for reasons unknown.

this company sends in the older, more experienced man, polite and over-eager, to convince you that he should get the job. then sends his son in, experience unknown, who i'd never met, to do work that he has only done once before for a friend. wayne tells his son to take his time, which he does, and takes almost three weeks for a 750 sq. ft. condo.

now i'm stuck paying for a new floor when i've already paid $1700 for the materials for a floor that wayne did not install properly. my house has been in shambles since before thanksgiving.
