In May of 2000, I called Orkin pest Control to my wood frame home for a quote for a preventive maintenance contract for termites. The salesman sold me a baiting system for $1,185.00 without even inspecting my home. He never left the dining room!

I received monthly notices on my front door from the technician regarding activity at the bait sites. There is no way the technician could have gotten into my backyard to inspect the majority of the bait sites without scaling a 6 foot locked privacy fence and having to get past my 4 dogs.

About 4 months ago I discovered that the entire side of my home has the siding falling off. In consulting with another pest control company, the termites in the walls of my home have been happily munching away for at least 3 years to have caused this much damage.

After several calls and repeating my story to Orkin, I finally got a district supervisor to agree to treat my home, for free, with Termidor.

The problem is the damage. It is estimated to cost a minimum of $3,000.00 to repair the termite damage. The termites have eaten through the drywall in one bedroom because they ran out of wood!

I work a full time job. My husband is terminally ill and we can not afford the repairs to our home. I feel that if the salesman had inspected my home, he would have discovered the infestation and perhaps used a more agressive treatment or if the technician had been checking all of the bait sites the extensive damage could have been avoided.

Orkin will not even discuss possible compensation for the damage I feel they are responsible for.

I trusted their expertise and reputation that they were protecting my home and all the while it was being chewed to bits!

They need to be held accountable!!!

I feel for you because I'm in a similar situation. However, you do have some recourse in Florida. Write a letter to the attention of Don Grant at: DACS Bureau of Entymology & Pest Control 1203 Governor's Circle Blvd, Suite 300 Tallahassee, FL 32301 and detail everything you've reported here. Mr. Grant will launch an investigation into what has been done to your house and will call the pest control company to task for their actions. If you have a guarranty/warranty (formerly known as bond) for subterranean termites which is all Termidor is good for, then they are liable for the repairs to your home. If the damage was caused by dry-wood termites but they *told* you the pests were subterraneans, they are liable as well. I hope this gives you a little hope.
