THE ORKIN SCAM

You call them to take care of a pest problem and they tell you $250 for a one time deal, OR you can do a 1 year contract instead where the guy just automatically shows up every 60 days to keep you pest free and the charge every 60 days is way cheaper than the $250. What they don't tell you is that the contract AUTO renews every year and you pay for the bi-monthly service whether it gets done or not.

I called their office after my year was up, talked to some guy, argued with me for 20 minutes that cancelling my contract was not advised and would be a horrible mistake. After 20 minutes of arguing he finally agreed, "in disgust", to close my account.

10 months later I start getting harrassing phone calls from a collection agency out of New York telling me how much I owe Orkin and that if I don't pay what I "owe" they're putting it on my credit report and will still be suing me for it. I tell them I closed that account almost a year ago, and was paid up when I did it. They say NO YOU DIDN'T.

The collection agency they use out of new york is full of those tough NY women in their 40's and 50's who've been around the block and LOVE a fight. They LOVE their job, and there's a zeal in their voice when they're smugly belittling you as just another deadbeat LIAR. Telling them off and hanging up doesn't help. They just keep calling every day.

After weeks of dealing with New York (because it took that long for them to tell me who I "owed" and why), I called the local office that I originally closed the account with in the first place and they refuse to help, too.

"Our technician showed up every 60 days, says he called you dozens of times, you never answered."

Me "First of all, he DIDN'T. Would you like to see my cell phone records? It's the only phone I have."

Her "That won't be necessary, we keep our own records."

Me "Okay, then why wasn't my account closed 10 months ago when I closed it? Why don't you have your records of that?"

Her "Because you didn't close your account. We have no record of it. And besides, we have to have a signed, faxed request from you to close your account. By the way, your next scheduled service is coming up and that'll be another $80."

THIS was the first time that ANYBODY at or from Orkin told me this. The guy I had dealt with 10 months prior didn't tell me that. I quickly wrote up my "request" and faxed it in. By the way, I HAD TO PAY every cent they claimed I owed to resolve this.

This description makes it sound like this was solved in one call, but it was not.  I had to call that office several times over the course of two weeks to finally get this information.
