I made the mistake of purchasing airline tickets on Orbitz site. The tickets were over $800.00 on Delta airlines. At no time did the site reveal that the tickets were non-refundable, in fact I went to the terms portion of the site with regards to my tickets and it said "not available". I wanted to cancel the tickets because I had changed my travel plans,it was only then I found out that the tickets were non- refunable.

This site is sponsored by Delta and a few other airlines, so when you get on the site they push Delta flights. When you try to cancel there is no way of doing so on the site but they give you an 888 number I tried for 4 days and it rang busy for over an hour, until I just gave up trying to reach them.

After several E-Mails, I was then told my tickets were un-refundable, and that I could have a year credit on the tickets, of course, there would also be a penalty if I would rebook any other flight within the year.

In this unfortunate time when the airlines are claiming they need to be helped by the Federal Government, they still sponser travel sites which they control, which do nothing but rip off their customers. Stay away from this site it is controlled by Delta,I personally am going to seek legal help to get my money back. No one in these times needs this.

I am a VERY frequent traveller and use orbitz.com often. I have found that calling the toll-free number worked well, (They picked up within 4 rings the one time I needed to speak with them) but sending an email to customer service is an exercise in futility. I cannot agree with the assertion that Delta flights are pushed. Delta rarely ends up being the most affordable in my searches, but maybe the originator of this complaint is going to/from Atlanta... In any case. here are a few suggestions for using orbitz to your best advantage: 1- Use the site to find the best airfare, then go directly to the carriers website and book it there. This allows you a single point of contact, saves the $5.00 fee, and, in most cases, the carriers offer bonus frequent flier miles for booking directly on their sites. 2- Make use of, if your plans allow, the 'check nearby airports' option. That has the potential to save a significant amount of money. but again, after finding the fare, book it directly. I hope this helps you make the most of your travel dollars. I have other comments on hotel programs and orbitz rates, but I want to keep this pertinent.

I have purchased several tickets from Orbitz. com and a very happy customer. Just last June, I purchased 4 tickets for the whole family to visit my in-laws in New Jersey. The whole trip costed me less than $1,000. That's less than $250/ticket roundtrip. The transaction was simple. I printed our itenerary and presented it to the counter at Delta Airlines. The site states that the ticket is non-refundable and I was happy with that because our trip was already planned and scheduled. For people who are not sure whether they can fly at a given date or not - this site is not for them, unless they are willing to pay extra to reschedule flight. For the person who is not happy about Orbitz: First of all, if you are not sure about the refund policy, you should have not completed your transaction. Your letter suggests that you were uneasy with the transaction yet you went ahead and finalized it - Orbitz nor Delta did not wring your arms to do to complete that transaction. Sometimes, it is better to handle things the long way in doing it right. Since you already know that Orbitz is related to Delta, you could have called Delta for more information. I call your sitaution, shortsightedness. It happens to many of us, but we should not blame others for it, but rather take the responsibility that we made the mistake also.

As a former consumer relations manager at a major oil company and a current government employee, my tendency is to normally side with the consumer in these type of cases. In this issue, however, the person filing this complaint has admitted that they are more than incidentally responsible for the problem. When they could not determine the conditions of the ticket, (they said they were "not available"), the reporter should not have entered into the transaction until the conditions were clarified for them by Orbitz. Obviously, they had a concern since they looked for the terms. The "reasonable and prudent" person that exists only in litigation would not have made the $800 purchase with an important question unanswered. Hope Orbitz does help them out, but they need to be much more careful in the future about entering into contracts without knowing the terms.

You are insulting yourself everytime you type a rebuttal. That advocate is right I am going through travel school right now and even I know that just about all tickets are non-refundable. I have used Orbitz since I first heard about them and my experience has been great but I don't just say I don't want to go on a trip at the last minute. If you travel so much why just change your mind at the last minute and blame the company. I guess if you would have gone through a travel agent and done the same thing you would blame them or the airline for your studidity. Plus I have never seen Delta prices for $800 unless you travel last minute. If Delta was so expensive why didn't you go with a cheaper airline. The prices on this website are more reasonable than you will find anywhere else.

Orbitz,The contuning Runaround RIP-OFF

Thu, November 08, 2001

After filing a complaint with the BBB, against this rip-off internet travel Co., a representive, called me saying the "Co" would look into the matter, saying they have had trouble with their site, and do I have any evidence that would help them with regard to to the fact that they don't have the terms of the tickets on the ones that I purchased.I faxed the entire purchase that I downloaded, no where did it state that the tickets that I purchased were "non-refundable".It specificaly showed that the terms were not available. That was three weeks ago, and the silence is deafening, no reply,no return of my money. nothing.DON'T DO BUSINESS WITH THIS COMPANY. When you look up the definition of Rip-Off in the dictionary, it should show you the Orbitz logo. Next trip is to my lawyer.

They filed the following rebuttal to the above Rip-Off Report: Their email: [email protected] Their name: Travel Consultant Their relationship to the company: Advocate Rebuttal: Obvouisly you dont travel very often. Most if notquite all TICKETS are NON-REFUNDABLE. Most airlines will allow you to change with a 100.00 change fee. This is not a NEW policy or anything. It has been around for quite a few years. They do this to keep people from constantly changing their itinary. I am not sure about ORBITZ disclosing the FARE RULES and such. But I do know they ALL airlines when you buy from them will tell you "NON-REFUNDABLE, NON-CHANGEABLE WITHOUT A CHANGE FEE AND ANY FARE DIFFERENCE". Now if you have a EMERGENCY situation come up such as a DEATH in the family or such that you can document, most airlines will alow you to change your plans. But to just decide "I DONT WANT TO GO" or such, they wont. The best advice is, "DONT BUY UNTIL YOU ARE 100% SURE YOU ARE GOING"

Orbitz the newest of the travel ripoff sites

#160

Mon, October 15, 2001

I notice Orbitz didn't rebutt the original report I filed,an advocate of the company, filed the rebuttal, whoever that might be, the response is simple, first of all I do travel a lot in my business, so I know a ripoff when it hits me in the face,Most travel sites on the internet list the terms of the fare you are getting,so you can see if the fare is non-refundable,Orbitz has a place on their site the listing of terms, however that chose not to list the terms on the tickets I purchased, Orbitz said they were not available.Does this "advocate" think That it is my duty to know every term for any tickets I purchase, when many travel agents don't even understand the terms, this is what we get a travel agent for to help us in a world where there are hundreds of fares and hundreds of ways of defauding the public. Is it not the duty of the travel agent to explain to its customer what the terms of the ticket are? Even if you buy directly from the air lines they tell if a ticket is nonrefunable. or is non cancellable,What penalties if you change the date of your travel,I expect to pay a penalty if I change the date of travel,I don't expect to be defrauded by an ripoff site like Orbitz, tellin me only when I wish to cancell that my tickets are non-refundable.This "advocate" insults the intelligence of the traveling public, and me, with this moronic rebuttal
