Further research on the alleged collected revealed that the call occurred at a time our business is not even open (Saturday afternoon), and even if someone was in the building, we don't answer the phone when we're not open if we don't recognize the number. This means the "collect call" would have gone to the answering service, and could not have lasted six minutes, as charged. NOBODY ANSWERED, NOBODY ACCEPTED THE CHARGES!!!

A couple of years ago we had the same issue on our phone bill. I spent days trying to find out who the bill was from and it finally turned out to be an independent pay phone company. My brother in law flew in from Oklahoma to attend his father's funeral. When his plane landed in Pendleton (19 miles away and in our extended calling area) he used a pay phone to call us collect so that we could come pick him up at the airport. The phone call lasted less then a minute and almost two months later we were billed for $24.95!! I tried to find out who the company adding the charge to our phone bill was and just like you there seemed to be no way of finding out. However, I had a good friend who was a troubleshooter for the phone company we use and he was the one that finally traced it backwards for us. Come to find out, the pay phone was owned by a small company who's only business was having pay phones in stratigic spots around the country. Since they owned the pay phone they could charge any amount they wanted too and there was nothing we could do about it since there was no way of contacting the company or disputing the bill. Of course I cannot say for sure, but I would just about lay good odds that this is exactly what happened to you as well.
