This company withdrew funds from my checking account without my authorization or any notification that they were going to do steal my money.  I called Car and Driver Magazine, that I was subscribed to, and for which the funds were withdrawn, and asked them what this was about.  Jennifer told me that my subscription went through a third party sponsor company that she refereed to as "newsub services" and gave me a phone number, 1-877-536-6414, to the company.  The number did not work.

I called the phone number listed on my bank statement, 800-642-5640, and reacted a robotic telephone menu system.  It gave me some choices that were not clear, but I managed to cancel the subscription.  The problem is that they will not give me a full refund.  The stole $29.00 and said I would receive $26.36 in one or two business days.

Since I did not authorize the debit from my account, I shouldn't be paying anything to these people.  Can you imagine how many people they have ripped off for $2.00 or $3.00 every month.

My law firm is investigating unauthorized charges for magazine subscriptions by NSS.  I would be interested in hearing about your situation if you have some free time.

My account was hit with 2 other extractions of funds with the total coming to $92.00.  ANd a fourth charge was about to drop for This Old House magazine.

Each withdrawal had a different 800 number, so I had to call three different times to kill these subscriptions.

I do not recall seeing anything about auto-renewing these subscriptions with no notice.

These subscriptions were the result of "customer rewards" after making a purchase from Buy.com and others, where I was offered magazine subscriptions for $2.00 for 6 months.

Here is what showed up in my account.

02/01/2010    DEBIT PURCHASE           -29.00
     TWX*873W9R*CAR&DRIVER 800-642-5640

01/28/2010    DEBIT PURCHASE           -41.00
     TWX*873W9R*READERS DIG 800-205-9198

 01/25/2010    DEBIT PURCHASE           -32.00
     TWX*9512U2*ELEC HOUSE 800-487-3567

When canceling the subscriptions, I was badgered to add more subscriptions before they finally let go and gave a conformation number.

I thought this sort of thing was illegal?
