Last year I had ordered several magazines online because it was a special price... Something like $2 to try a year of a magazine. The fine print said I would receive a notice when my subscription renewal was due. I never received a notice and had forgotten about the "automatic renewal". I had moved across country & also lost my job.

I received my credit card statement and it seemed unusually high so I started going thru all of my transactions. To my surprise, I had $222 in "TWX...." charges for various magazines. My jaw hit the floor!! $62 for Business Week, $36 for Elle, $57 for Entertainment Weekly and so on....

I investigated the charges and called the 877-754-4892 number listed with each charge. It takes you to an automatic phone system that is unclear.

Here's what to do to cancel a subscription and receive a refund:

Select the "cancel" option. Tell them what magazine They will say something like "great news.... You've been offered...." Say NO Then they will offer you another option of cancelling future billings and keeping your current subscription that you paid for. Say NO. The last option will offer you a refund.

I didn't understand all this on the first magazine I tried to cancel and stopped after the second option. Once I realized how unclear and sneaky they were being, I figured it out. I went back to the main menu and hit # a few times to speak to a representative who immediately refunded me.

It was quite an ordeal and took me 45 minutes to cancel all the charges and subscriptions. They didn't give me a full refund either- they took about $2 from each charge as a processing fee or some b.s.

Buyer beware- order your subscriptions directly from the magazine itself!

Frustrating process, but an easy solution

I went through the same ordeal, and came out with satisfactory results; I ordered two magazines through Synapse, and they charged me before I was given an option to renew my subscriptions. So I called them and asked for a refund.

It was a teribble pain to find a phone number that did not go straight to the dial tone. As stated in the original report, the first thing to do is call 877-754-4892. Then select the "cancel" option, and after that, reply "NO" to all the offers and options the automated system will give you. The very last option is for a magazine cancellation and refund, and after replying "YES" to that, they will also give you a reference number.

Just to make sure everything was official and that I was sure to get my money back, I called Synapse Group, Inc. with the phone number given on their BBB (Better Business Bureau) profile; the main telephone number was stuck on a dial tone, so I simply tried every other additional number until I was able to reach someone. They confirmed the cancellations and the refunds immediately.
