I recently applied for a line of credit at my bank. Knowing I had no credit issues and had good credit, I didnt give a second thought to what happened next. After completing my credit application, I was contacted by my bank who asked for an explanation of a registered debt collection against my name and social security number. All the bank could give me was the name National recovery along with an account number. The bank stated that they had no other information on the reporting agency other then it was listed as medical billing collections.

I immediately googled the name and was not at all surprised to find what I did. After clarifying the companys full name was National Recovery Agency or NRA, the first listings I found was nothing but complaints from victims of their incompetence. I reluctantly looked further and located their web site and called their number. I spoke with a rep and gave her the account number I had. Upon looking up the account, it was soon learned that the collection was actually for my father who has the same name (but not the same birthdates, social security number, address or phone number). After explaining that I was a Jr. and not responsible for my fathers debt and that I was appalled that they could attach a false claim to my SS# she said she would try to resolve the issue. The rep then requested my SS# which I declined to do for OBVIOUS reasons but did elect to send her a copy of my current drivers license which she agreed should suffice. She told me it would be a couple days before it would be resolved and that she would contact me.

After a few days and no call back, I called and left a message but did not receive a return call. I called again the next day and did reach her. I was advised that the error was cleared up and that the credit report would reflect the change in 30 to 90 days. As I was in the process of applying for credit, I asked for something in writing which I could give my bank to show them it was an error and was told I would need a waver from my bank to send to them so they could provide such a letter. After calling the bank, they advised me that they did not have any such waiver and that I would need to work with the confused collections company.

The next day, I called NRA back and asked for something in writing but instead was put on with what I assumed to be a supervisor whom preferred not to give her name. She immediately began talking in circles and blaming the credit bureau for everything as well as myself. It ended up in a shouting match and she hung up on me. So now I cant get a loan that I fully deserve due to a scam collections company who illegally attached a debt to my name and social security number. Why is a company like this even allowed to operate?

You've got a case....

HURRY....find a lawyer right away. You've got a case and they may just end up paying you, so long as what I read from you is accurate and true.

Lemberg & Associates is a firm I used for just this type of case. I got paid and it didn't cost me a thing.

Know your rights! If you don't know your rights....you don't have any!

Also, any contact you have with a collections agency should be in writing and you should research what to write BEFORE you do anything. Send it registered and certified mail for legal purposes.

Dispute it with the credit reporting agencies

Have you written to the credit reporting agencies, equifax, experian, so on and so forth? This is very easily disputable. If you go on to annualcreditreport.com you are able to get a free credit report once a year. You can see what is being negatively reported about you and you are able to dispute it online. You can also gather all the info you have and write to all 3 of the agencies which tends to take longer. I would dispute it, b/c it could be a very easy fix. If they NRA company cannot verify the account and that it in deed belongs to you then they are required to remove it immediately.
