The MTA I am referring to is the New York City subway system. Their service began to improve about a year ago, but quickly worsened and on the whole it is worse than ever. At least since I have been living in New York City (I moved here in 2000). They encourage people to stop driving and take public trasnportation, but apparently they can't handle the increased number of people. They completely disregard people who work odd hours, they completely disregard people who live in the outer boroughs, and in upper Manhattan. Meaning the service is too slow, and spotty.

In 2008, with the price of riding the subway being what it is, it should be more reliable. So, as a result planning is very difficult, to the point that driving during rush hour would be more time efficient. Not only is service bad uptown and outside of Manhattan, but also in midtown in the morning and middle of the day. Also the employees rarely consider the riders' that need to transfer, because they are always behind schedule. So when there is an opportunity to transfer the transfer train will close doors and pull away as people desperately run across the platform. There is no ryhme or reason to their schedule. Shuttle trains are inefficient. The shuttle train will wait for 2 or 3 trains to drop people off before it takes everyone to their final destinations. When in the meantime the shuttle train could have gone all stops and come back before the next regular train arrives.

The MTA is threatening to raise the prices again after doing so only months ago. Since the last 2 increases service has gotten progressively worse. I see a lot of construction for cosmetic improvements, but no improvement in service. Makes no sense. They need to get a handle on providing good, or just, not horrible, service before they make the stations look pretty. They are ripping everyone off. They are stealing our time. Time is money. I have had to take taxis because the train was so late. I mean 45 minutes late at 6pm. This is very serious to me and many other hard working New Yorkers who keep paying more for less.
