I responded to an ad in CareerBuilders that sounded interesting. "Sales and Customer Service with Growth Potential" with the company name RFL Inc. Then several ads and applications I see this ad "ENTRY LEVEL POSITIONS - Start Immediately!!" with the company name RF Lilly. I didn't immediately connect them, put in another app.
A short time later I get a call to schedule an interview from someone named Amy. When I tried to ask questions, she evaded by essentially saying all would be revealed at the interview. When I asked her to hold for a moment so I could pull over (was on my cell in the car), wanted to get the particulars, she tells me to just give her my email address and she'd send me some info and the directions.
It just seemed a little too pat for me, so when I got home I decided to do some research, and boy am I glad I did.
The first thing I find when I was trying to locate the ad I responded to - they have 7 ads on CarreerBuilder alone, all along the same vein, big on promises, not big on the details of the job(s). So went to Sunbiz.org (State of Florida Dept that oversees business licensing...), first, there is no RFL, Inc. listed in the state of Florida, RF Lilly and Associates, comes up as owned by Richard Toplak, who also owned Metropolitan Management Systems (which is defunct as of 9/25/09), as is another business, named "FW MSI, INC." - both of the same address in Davie, FL and were listed as solely owned by Richard Toplak. RF Lilly and Associates, LLC, actually shows Richard Toplak & Liliana Toplak as managers with an address listed in Margate.
A google of Richard Toplak shows he has been in this business for a long time, this link takes you to an article on it when he was in Chicago http://www.chicagoreporter.com/index.php/c/Inside_Stories/d/Peddling_Hope:_'Steel_Wheel'_Salesmen_Take_On_Chicago
While I'm reading this article, a friend calls me, and I'm telling him what I'm finding on this company and he realizes this is the place that his college age son "worked for" a couple weeks ago. Spent a couple days following someone else around carrying the boxes of crap they were trying to sell, but he wasn't getting paid until he actually went out on his own.
This is one of those companies that send people out to sell cheap crap on the streets and door to door. There is no "customer service" involved, it's only sales, hard core door to door putting miles on your shoes sales. There is no "entry level management potential".
I'm writing this because I think people should know as much as they can before you go to an interview, when the company doesn't provide that info, or as with this one seems to evade giving it, then we need to have a way to find it. Again, the company names I find are:
RF Lilly & Associates, R. F. Lilly and Associates, RFL Inc., Midwest Impulse Inc (formerly of Chicago), Metropolitan Management Systems, FW MSI, Inc, and Metro Marketing in Minneapolis, MN
Hopefully anyone googling any of these company names will be able to see what they have to look forward to, I'm not saying that no one could do this job successfully, I'm just not fond of the scummy way they try to get people. To me there is no such thing as too much info.

This guy who wrote this used to abuse his fiance! She wound up having to move away from him across the country and she is still employed by one of our affiliated offices. You simply can't believe everything that you read on the internet! There are always two sides to every story, and as an old employee of Metro-MSI, I can honestly say that this company is really awesome and they offer great opportunities for those who want to work hard to have something of their own.
