About 2 years ago I signed up with MCI over the phone for a cell phone. MCI had sent me a postcard in the mail announcing a deal. I had been using AT&T, but thought I might be able to get a better deal with MCI. What a mistake!

When I signed up for the service, I specifically asked for a local number. When I received the phone, they had assigned a long distance number. They said the carrier they were using for my deal did not have local numbers in my area. I told them that when I signed up, they said they could get me a local number. This was the first time I had heard that they didn't have their own cellular service, but are resellers of other companies. They were eventually able to find me a local number.

After having the phone about a week, I started getting a recording when I tried to make a call that said I was not recognized as an authorized user. I immediately called MCI and was told that their computers were down. I called them every day for about a week and every day they said their computers were down. I was unable to use my phone during any of this time.

I finally got fed up and decided to cancel my service. I called MCI to cancel my service and I returned the phone and all accessories. I received confirmation they received the phone.

Unfortunately, when I had signed up for the phone initially, they charged my credit card for the wrong amount. They had basically charged me double what I should have been charged. I was trying to get them to refund my credit card.

I faxed, e-mailed, and sat on hold for hours at a time. I called numerous times and generally bugged them to death. Every time I called I was transferred to a different person and a different department. They wouldn't let me speak to a supervisor and were generally rude and unhelpful. Months after I sent back their phone and cancelled their service, I finally spoke to the right person and got my credit card refunded. (The girl at my credit card company told me she used to work for MCI and they had mis-charged her credit card and refused to refund her money.)

Now, 2 yrs. later, I received a collection notice from Sunrise Collection Services saying I owe Worldcom Wireless $228.22. I called and asked what they were talking about since I don't owe MCI a dime. They said I owe a $200 disconnect fee and $28.22 for a month's worth of service.

I said they were crazy since I didn't even have the phone for a month and wasn't about to pay a disconnect fee for service that was bogus to begin with. Also, I informed them that I was never told of a disconnect fee any time during purchase or cancellation of said service.

I have refused to pay the amount and was told that it would go against my credit.

MCI is the worst company I have ever dealt with. They are a rip-off and have terrible customer service. I went running back to AT&T and have never had a problem. I just hope this gets cleared up without a lot of fuss.

Be aware! Don't be fooled by a "good deal."
