Bad design no help full of s**t many complaints ....

I bought a Maytag Atlantis washer and dryer. The washer doesn't spin properly, so my clothes come out wringing wet. Also, the washer does not filter out any lint, so dark clothes come out with lint. The stainless steel basket has some new design that is supposed to auto-balance. It actually slows down the spin cycle. Sometimes the basket gets "locked up" and requires bruit force to get it spinning again.

Three calls to Maytag have resulted in a new timer, a new lid switch and new belts. My one-year warrantee is now up, and it spins as bad as it ever has. Also, the agitator is agressive so my towels are eaten up. I have read on other websites about similar comsumer complaints. Several emails to Maytag have gone unresponded. I surely hope no one buys any Maytag products because they suck.

That stupid "Maytag Man" is bored because he doesn't fix anything. He knows its due to bad design, so all he does is clown us. I have been told my "draining problem" is due to too much soap. I have to use "high efficiency" soap to lower the suds.

I have heard about the need to use hot water, then cold water, then hot water. Make up your minds. I'm sorry. I don't use much soap. It drains fine. Its my clothes come out too wet. I will sell them cheap as soon as I can afford a pair of Duets. Robot Wars anyone?

They don't recoginize the "lemon law"

#2Consumer Suggestion

Tue, October 21, 2003

I am Amy's husband. Our resolution was the following: 1. After (at least) 4 visits to our house by an authorized Maytag repairman, we demanded he call Maytag himself. 2. Maytag told him he replaced all the parts he could replace. No, he did not replace the transmission, the basket, or the outter metal box the whole thing sits in. Everything else was replaced. 3. The previos problems remained. 4. Since we charged this on our Lowes credit card, and Maytag would not take this machine back, we complained to our creditor. They gave us the number to Lowes upper management. 5. A phone call to Lowes' national "customer care" personnel resulted in a call from a local Lowes manager authorizing us to drop this piece of junk Maytag washer up, and pick up a brand new one. Note: Since this took just over one year to complete, the 2003 model remedied many of the problems the 2002 model had. We looked at www.epinons.com for reviews. Many people with 2002 models mirrored our frustrations, and people with 2003 models actually recommended this model. This goes to prove this was a manufacturing design flaw. I don't care what you say about the quality of the repairman. He can only replace parts. The design was flawed. We were told many times to use hot water, then cold water, then liquid soap, then powered soap. If this is a "high efficiency" model, then why did Maytag give us a sample of regular soap? Why were there no mention of using high efficiency soap? It's not like we're using a Neptune, or anything. Bottom line: the 2002 model was flawed in many ways. Please read www.epinions.com before you plunk down money on anything that you value. I have, and I am much happier. By the Way, as soon as I win the lottery, or otherwise can afford a new model, I will put this piece of junk out on the street for free. I just hope I don't get cited for littering. I appreciate all your comments. The only way Maytag would help is if they had a class action lawsuit. They don't recoginize the "lemon law", and yes, my wife was about ready to sue them in small claims court if Lowes didn't step up. I applaud Lowes for their actions. Unfortunately, the model didn't really go bad until the point where Lowes wouldn't take it back.

If you complain loud enough Maytag will offer to buy back

#3Consumer Suggestion

Fri, October 17, 2003

Call Maytag Consumer Service, ask for the supervisor. If you complain loud enough Maytag will offer to buy back the machine at a pro-rated amount. I agree the problem is annoying at best. The service tech should have looked to the brake package adjustment, the main bearing, motor spring/glide set, pump, drain hose for the problem. The consumer talking about rustout needs to look to the bleach dispenser for a leak causing the rust out problem to start with. And to the graduate student doing the thesis on the inefficiencies of the American laundry products I offer this. Look at Electrolux Europe & Zanussi, they both have higher repair rates, lower effiencies. The heating function you speak of is very inefficient, costly and necessitated by the lack of good detergents, poor hot water production in the home. European's like to brag about their products, but the US has better service rates, the per unit cost is one-fourty of the European cost and the efficencies are higher. I agree that there is a design available that will dry a load of blue jeans in 10 - 15 minutes using one-sixth of the energy. The Appliance Manufacturer's will not use it.

American Washers: overpriced and obsolete

#4Consumer Comment

Tue, September 02, 2003

I am very interested in this subject because I am writing my thesis about the phenomenon that american washers have basically not changed since the 1950s, waste water and energy and are not even able to heat their own water like it is standard in other parts of the world. In my view the reason that american consumers are still buying obsolete and overpriced washer technology is that the american washer market is dominated by only 4 companies and that nothing is going to change because there is a lack of competition. I would like to get in contact with anybody who has (or had) trouble with american toploaders (vertical axis) and would like to fill out a survey (via email) which I would use in my thesis. My email is: [email protected] Thanks,

The real problem, Obviously, this is a design problem with the Atlantis that Maytag must know about.

#8Consumer Suggestion

Mon, June 23, 2003

After several months of trouble with wet clothes at the end of the spin cycle with my new Atlantis washer, the authorized Maytag repairman fixed the problem. It only required a grease application on the plate that the tub rests on. Friction was preventing it from spinning at full speed. I also would find lumps of detergent on my clothes as I pulled them out of the dryer. This was caused by the same problem. Friction prevented the washer from agitating properly. After months of wet, soapy clothes, a little grease solved the problem. Obviously, this is a design problem with the Atlantis that Maytag must know about. Last night my Atlantis quit functioning totally. It DOES buzz, smell like it's burning, and cause all the lights in my house to dim when I turn it on. If only the motor worked, it would spin and agitate just fine. P.S. Mine walks too and I have a concrete floor.

#9Consumer Suggestion

I had a Maytag repair man come to the house and look at the problem. He replaced the pulley on the bottom of the drum, the belt, the belt tension spring, and the plate that the motor is mounted on. The plate that the motor is mounted on is designed to let the motor slide back and forth as it changes directions. It had rusted badly (in only 3 years) and was not allowing the motor to slide properly. This would cause it to bind and not put proper tension on the belt. The drum would not spin at top speed during the drain cycle as a result. I am not a repair man, but this is how he explained the problem to me. My machine has worked fine for 2 months now. Look over the repair man's shoulder next time he has your machine open and see if the plate under the motor on the front left side of the machine is all rusted. Maybe you have the same problem. Hope this helps.

You need a qualified Maytag Technician

#13Consumer Suggestion

Sorry for your dissatisfaction w/ the Maytag Atlantis washer.Seems as though whoever is servicing your machine has addressed every issue except the one that is causing your laundry not to be properly spun. The issue lies within your bearings, the transmission,or your pump is clogged. The gentlemans opinion of your problem (KARL) is incorrect. The fault lies within the fact that you havent had a Maytag authorized technician in your home or just havent had a competent one which could have called the engineers @ Maytag corp. and properly diagnosed and fixed your problem. An extended warranty through any other company other than Maytag Dependability plus will result in the same problem of your machine being "misdiagnosed" by part swappers. If you have purchased an "Energy Star" washer MAV9600E you most certainly do NEED to use high efficiency detergent because the enzymes work differently and are designed for machines that use less water. You not properly spun out clothes issue lies within the Thrust bearing kit or the transmission. That Particular machine is in FACT the best manufactured quality you can find in the 21st century among American white goods manufacturers and comes with the best warranty. One year parts and labor, 2nd yaer on ALL parts, 5 years on the washer motor and solid state controls, 10 years on the transmission and against cabinet rust and lifetime on stainless wash basket. As far as the self cleaning lint filter, it does exist and does work very well you lint problem is being caused by some type of ragged material you put in your washer.

There is no really good solution to your problem. Unfortunatly, all of the major appliance company's do the same thing now. They read from a script and stick to that script 100%. The only thing I can suggest is to purchase an extended warranty from the store you purchased the appliance. They usually have a clause that states they will give you a brand new product if it is not repaired within 3 attempts.
