Tell us has your experience with this business or person been good? What's this?

I recently used a bank debit card to purchase less than $20 of gasoline directly from a gas pump at the Loves store in Clayton, NM.  Later that day, I learned that Loves's automatically debited an additional $25 from the same checking account with no notice they were doing it.

Love's Corporate later advised me they automatically debit an additional $25 - $125 whenever a debit card is swiped into a gas pump, and then credit that amount back into your account within 3 business days.  I advised Love's Cprporate customer service that if a credit or debit card is used to purchase gasoline directly from a pump, the purchase amount is automatically credited to their business account from the customer's credit/debit account and, accordingly, there should be no reason whatsoever to debit a customer's bank account with this additional "fee."

This being the case, why does Love's need to, then, also "borrow" $25 - $125 from a customer's bank account if the amount of gas purchased by the customer is immediately paid for from the customer's credit/debit account at the time of purchase?  Love's Corporate admitted this and HAD NO EXPLANATION for this questionable business practice.

I have a theory.....I suspect that Love's deposits this "temporarily borrowed" money, on a daily basis, into an interest baring account at a bank which pays interest of a daily basis.  In short, Love's "borrows" money from its customers in order for them to earn interest on it with no authorization from its custmers.

I am retired from law enforcment and insurance fraud investigations and have never been subject to this most unusual business practice.

To save yourself this hassle, you can always go inside and pay the cashier directly with your debit card.  You can go inside, tell them how much money in gas you want, pay, and then pump your gas.  At most gas stations, when you prepay and don't use it all, you can get an updated receipt right there at the pump.  Therefore, there won't be a hold on your account.  Most if not all gas stations state at their pumps that there will be a hold placed on your account.  This isn't their fault, it is the banks.  When you put your card in the pump, the bank doesn't know how much you will pump so they put an automatic hold for a certain amount on your card.  When you are done pumping your gas, that is when you see the second charge.  Although you see two seperate charges on your card for the same gas station, they don't reconcile their debit/credit card payments until they close or at about 1159pm if they are open 24 hours.  Even though your bank knows how much you charged, they won't know exactly from the gas station until they reconcile.  It is impossable for a company to reconcile after every purchase.

As a guess: Your bank is run by b***s.

When you swipe your card to get the pump to start it runs a Pre-Authorization for a set amount, depending on the station you may tell them by choosing an amout you expect to spend.

The pump starts, you pump your fuel. For me When I travel $125.00 give or take.

When you hang up the nozzel the system now charges the exact amount to your card and uses the approval # from the Pre-auth to tell your bank this is the same transaction.

At this time YOUR BANK is supposed to clear the Pre-Auth and pay the actual amount.

What actually happened is that because the Pre-Auth is not cleared by your banks Poorly Performing Employees and the badly programed bank card system is you see as two charges.

Loves never gets that money even temporarily. No fraud, just annoying, and your Bank will deny culpability.

So even though it looks like a double chargeIt not fraud.

Please re-submit you report, Blame the correct people and maybe put it in the right section, Not D.A.s maybe Banks, as thats who messed this up.
