TERRIBLE EXPERIENCE!!! STAY AWAY!!!  Less than a year ago, my sister purchased my mother a $150 gift certificate for a full car detail.  Today, when my mother tried to drop her car off to get it done, the "manager" Juan quickly pointed out that the gift certificate stated in the overly broad disclaimer language at the bottom that it was only good for 6 months from the date of purchase.  When my mother asked why they wouldn't honor a gift certificate for an auto detail less than a year after it was purchased, Juan replied "This is hard work," as if that somehow justified Lakewood Auto Detail keeping $150 for no work at all.

When I intervened and said I was planning to post a negative review warning others, Juan said he had considered honoring the gift certificate for an additional $75 but was not going to do so.  As if paying $225 for a car detail would have made the situation satisfactory to anyone?  Juan then lied and said he prints out every gift certificate himself and tells every customer that they are only good for six months.  Turns out my sister purchased the gift certificate after speaking to a female employee there, who then e-mailed her the gift certificate.  When I asked for a telephone number at which to reach the owner, I was given an e-mail address for the owner.  When my sister showed up later to discuss the matter and asked for the owner to be called, Juan declined, saying he was going to take his lunch break.  Juan later threatened to and did call the police when my sister said she would wait until Juan finished his lunch break to make contact with the owner.  REALLY!?!  At one point, Juan, while smiling, said "My owner gathers all the expired gift certificates and shreds them."  Just a warning, this is the type of customer service you can expect if your experience there does not go the way you hoped.

Hello thank you for allowing me to comment my side. As mentioned the family did come in and I did mention to them the certificate had expired. We have terms and conditions on our website to protect both the consumers and our shop. It states on our terms on our website, printed copy is posted at our shop for all to see and printed directly on the certificate it expires 6 months from dated purchased.

I told them I will give them a 50% discount for the inconvenience yet they didn’t accept they even went online and cause tremendous humiliation towards me about this situation which all I did was enforce company terms of service.

I’m the only one who makes and prints certificates. At that time the sister purchase the certificate online which she had the chance to read our terms and see that the certificate expires 6 months from purchase.

Regulations do not appear to be as easily defined for Paper certificates, but it does appear that Texas law allows a Paper Gift Certificate to expire in certain circumstances and in some cases they would be within their rights to no longer accept it.

The question you need to figure out is did they follow the disclosure requirements.  They do print the expiration date on them, but if you were not specifically told when it expires then you may have a valid claim.  Also, depending on if they consider this an "Electronic" Gift Certificate or not may meean that it can not expire for at least 5 years.

I am not an attorney, nor should you think of this as legal advice.  But hopefully this may point you in the right direction so you can do some additional research into the specific laws to see if it would still be considered valid.

Good Luck
