I recently placed on consignment approx 70 articles of clothing, most worn only a couple of times and several with tags still on clothes on a Saturday afternoon. The store was closed on Sunday and Monday. Tuesday morning I realized I had on accident placed 2 new pair of pants that I had only bought 2 weeks prior in hampers with consignment clothes.

I went to the store that Tuesday morning and explained what had happen and offered to buy back my pants since to replace them I would have to pay new price and make approx a 70 mile round trip to purchase. I was taken to the back room where approx 10 items were hanging on a rack and told that none of my belongings were put out yet. I had earlier seen 2 items of mine on racks in store area for purchase.

The owner denied that any items were out for sell yet and the only items I had for consignment were in the back and not put out yet and I must have either given away clothes or "lost them in my house". I stated that I was new to area and been here only 2 weeks and didn't know anyone to give them to and they were not lost in my house. I stated off the top of my head one item I knew for sure that I had brought to consignment shop because the lady working commented that she liked item and that "we have similar taste".

The woman then called the other woman 'my daughter" and told me that her daughter have only taken that one item home to try on since she didn't have time to at the store and that was the only item that I had brought in that wasn't in the store and again I must have given the clothes to someone else or "lost them".

Bogus, I'm glad I had accidentally placed those 2 pants in the consignment bound hampers or months would have gone by before I realized like Goodwill, employees rifle through clothing and take what they want. Beware w/ your dealings w/ consignment stores. If I'd known I basically gave those horrible people my clothes, I would have donated them since many were work appropriate clothing to an agency for women entering the job market who are disadvantaged and not someone who owns their own business.

Not all consignment shops are this way!

As the owner of a 12 year old consignment shop and a member of NARTS (National Asociation of Resale & Thrift Shops)I can assure you that your experience is not the usual. These steps may make for a better experience with another shop: 1. Make a list of the items you are consigning. 2. Get a copy of the contract. 3. Make sure you understand how the shop operates. 4.Is the shop a memeber of NARTS? If so, they are bound by a code of ethics. Member shops can be found at www.narts.org 5. Try another shop-there are millions of happy consignors making money everyday.
