Given the number of Just Brakes write-ups, this is like piling on, but they really deserve it. I took my 2000 Solara to Just Brakes because Midas told me I needed new pads and turned rotors and they wanted nearly $300. (The fact that there was MUCH more life on the pads than what Midas said is not the subject of this write up, but maybe I'll add another). I have been hearing over and over about the Just Brakes, 4-wheel friction reline for less than $100, so I decided to try them.

Now keep in mind, I wasn't having ANY brake problems at this point, but I had been told by Midas I was getting close to metal-on-metal. The car had 63,298, mostly highway miles when I took it in to Just Brakes. I verified the price fortheir service and asked about doing a check first to see if they really needed to be replaced. To do a visual inspection was free but a "internal" inspection was something like $28 if I didn't do the reline and free if I did. Thinking that I already knew I needed pads, I said go ahead with the internal. That was my biggest mistake!

I told the service manager my wife was picking me up and that he should call me at the number I left when he knew what needed to be done. He pleaded for me to give him 15 minutes so he could go over the car and tell me right away, so I stayed. After 15 minutes or so, I got the dreaded "could you come into the shop with us, we need to show you some things." Well, the mechanic had completely disassembled my brakes at all 4 wheels. Of course various parts, which I had never seen before, looked somewhat worn, dirty and some were even a bit rusty. So basically, they wanted to replace pretty much everything. The price was somewhere between $400 and $500.

I patiently listened to all of their suggesteions and then said, no, please just do the reline and turn the rotors. I left the shop and shortly after I got home, I got a call from another manager making sure that I was shown everything that was wrong with my brakes. I said I did and again insisted they just stick with the basic service. So they did, but when I went in to pick up the car, they made me sign a handwritten note on my invoice that reads, "Customer declined suggested repairs. Breaks will squeak, squeal, pull, pulsate and wear prematurely. Customer was advised."

So basically, I dropped $100 ($110.08 to be exact) and I have NO warranty because they will pull out the invoice and say, "hey, we told you so."

And of course, almost immediately, the squeaking and squealing has started. So far, the stopping is not at all affected so I am going to go with it for a while. But if you want to turn heads as you drive down the street, I HIGHLY endorse the Just Brakes, $99.88, 4-wheel friction reline. You WILL be noticed!
