Tell us has your experience with this business or person been good? What's this?
I entered into the Jubilee program in October 2000, much to the dismay of my fiance. I should have listened to him. I have two files, two inches thick, on this company including written correspondence, records of phone conversations, and a copy of the NSF check that they sent me and other items. My time with Jubilee is much like many of yours. Voice mail, phone calls not returned, creditors kept calling me, nothing was ever paid or settled, BBB BS, etc.

I contacted the BBB via mail and phone calls. They said the contacted Jubilee and got a response and mailed me their response. BBB swiped their hands together like, "that's done".

I wrote letters to the Attorney General, the L.A. District Attorney, the L.A. Times, the State of California Dept. of Consumer Relations, City of Downey City Hall, and State of Calif. Governor Gray Davis. My concerns were passed and forwarded to other "divisions".

Not only did I lose money to Jubilee, but I lost time from work, time from family, and peace of mind. I was so involved and obsessed with "getting" John Gustavsen, President of Jubilee, for what he did to me that everything else was put on the back burner.

I felt good about the letters, phone calls, e'mails that I was sending out, felt like I was doing something to help stop this company from doing to others what it had done to me. Then I would get a response from who I contacted. L.A. Times ignored me, BBB seemed like as long as Jubilee answered them then Jubilee was not doing anything wrong, the D.A. phoned me and said he couldn't take civilian complaints, that comaplaints had to come through the police dept., Attorney General ignored me, the Governor forwarded my complaint to the Dept., of Consumer Affairs, they sent me a letter saying they would look into it. They phoned me a couple of weeks later asking if I had received a check from Jubilee, I told them that I had received a check but that it was only part of what was due me, she said that Jubilee said they sent me everything that was due me and that's all that she could do for me. These responses irritated me ever more.

I asked how Jubilee could continue to rip people off and nobody was doing anything about it?! I wrote long letters to John Gustavsen, one letter being 7 pages long, "John" wrote me one sentence back not answering any of my concerns. I hope the FTC nails him and nails him good. They need to take him out of his $606,000.00 home he's living in on my money and yours.

Also, Heidi wrote her Rip-off Report and mentioned a class action lawsuit. I would be interested in hearing more on this.

Hi all. I was the office manager for Heritage Institute for Debt-Free Living in 2000 before they shut down. I want to say first of all that I am VERY sorry for what has happened to you all. I worked very hard for HIDFL, putting in 80 or 90 hour weeks regularly, and I probably spoke to many of you back then. It makes me sick that you have been hurt in this way. I want to let you know that Jubilee and Heritage are(were) SEPARATE COMPANIES. In reading these posts, I see a lot of references to "Jubilee AKA Heritage Institute for Debt-Free Living". HIDFL (which was based in Phoenix) entered into a contract with Jubilee (based in California) where we agreed to sell their debt elimination service through our marketing efforts. We also created files for clients and did other administrative tasks for them. We took Jubilee's word, just as you did, that they would do what was promised when we sent new clients to them. I didn't deal much with Jubilee other than sending files and reports to them, and just assumed that they were doing their job. HIDFL finally went out of business when it was obvious that the whole relationship wasn't working. The founders of HIDFL then started another debt elimination marketing company (Financial Freedom Southwest) under contract with a company that had nothing to do with Jubilee. FFSW has gone out of business as well. I don't speak for the founders of HIDFL, and have no idea what they think of this whole situation. I also don't have any interest in either protecting or attacking HIDFL. The legal issues are between authorities, John Gustavson, and the founders of HIDFL. My only intention is to let you know that they are separate companies, and to offer my sympathy to you in regard to the pain you have suffered in this situation. If there is any question I can answer for you about Jubilee or HIDFL that would help you, please feel free to ask.
