Online one day, I came across an interesting link that read-"Free Poetry Contest! You Could Win and Have Your Poem Submitted Into a Limited Editon Anthology! Cash Prizes!"
I thought to myself, 'Ok, I'll give this a try.' I love writing poetry and spent a lot of time writing the poem that I entered, so I was ecstatic when I recieved a letter from the so-called "International Library of Poetry". 'Wow',I thought to myself. 'Maybe I have talent'.
My family, being that my mother is a single parent, is not very wealthy, so when I read that $50,000 in cash prizes were being awarded, I thought I had some extra money for college.
I did not pay the extra fee for my copy of the book, and am very glad for that now. I had the idea that my poetry was something special and new, and that I could win more contests.
While looking for more online today, I found a site that exposed poetry contest frauds, and decided to look and see which ones to look out for. "International Library of Poetry" was on the top of the list, and my dreams and hopes of being an acclaimed poet were over forever.
There were letters, news reports, and expositories on this fraudulent organization. A class of first graders had entered the contest(some not even knowing what poetry was), and all were excepted. Their hopes rose and fell as well.
