I was interested in joining the Insperity sales team in Fort Lauderdale, FL. On Wednesday (08/15/18). I interviewed with Brett Steele (linkedin.com/in/brettsteele1/) (the District Manager in the Fort Lauderdale office) along with the Regional Manager from another office. I was shocked and disturbed at what I learned.

As is typical in any job interview, I walked them through my past sales experience – different situations where I was able to identify a problem that the customer was facing and used my solution to help them. That seemed to have NO interest to Brett as he repeatedly asked to hear about situations where the customer did NOT have any type of problem whatsoever. He just wanted to hear about examples where I “forced” a solution on to the customer whether it was beneficial for them or not.

I don’t really have any such examples, but I navigated around the conversation as best as I could – explaining how I was able to solve a problem and bring value to each client I worked with. I proceeded to give more examples of not only looking for a problem I could solve for the customer (such as cutting their costs or improving their efficiency) but always giving them viable “options” to consider. Again, this was of no interest to Brett, who proudly admitted that Insperity does not save the customer money in any type of way. He explained “That is not our value proposition.” Surprised at such an admission, I still proceeded knowing that I would bring a different sales attitude to the team if I were chosen.

I got a call from Insperity’s recruiter the very next day (Thursday) saying that Brett was very impressed and wanted me to come back for a second interview the very next day (Friday) – indicating that I was one of his finalists. Brett asked me to bring an “action plan” outlining my proposed sales plan. I brought an extremely detailed sales plan that I had prepared, walking Brett through proprietary methods and sources I would use – many of which he admitted he hadn’t heard of. He admitted that my proposed methods were “smart” and drilled me on details about how I would execute – which I gladly shared.

First thing Monday morning, I was informed that I was not selected and no reason was given. However, 3 other candidates were chosen.

Brett clearly used me for my ideas and had no intention of actually hiring me. He is unethical and lacks integrity (critical in sales) and by his own admission is not really interested in helping the customer (which is what sales should be about) He is only interested in helping himself. And now he will be training other sales reps to operate in the same manner.

If you are in the market for HR services, DO NOT USE INSPERITY – particularly the Fort Lauderdale office. Consider one of the many other more reputable organizations – such as ADP, Paychex, Tri-NET, XcelHR, JustWorks, or Oasis Outsourcing – depending on the size and structure of your business.
