Liberty Online services appeared on my Verizon bill to the tune of $30.85. The company is impossible to reach, the number they provided was a payment center and of no help at all. Verizon insists on a timely payment and if we refuse to pay, late interest penalties will be assessed. I think the Attorney General should be aware of this blatent slamming technique this company is employing with Verizon as a co-conspirator!

WE DID PAY ATTENTION

#2Consumer Suggestion

Fri, March 07, 2003

We just discovered 5 months of these charges ($32.65 a month) on our bill. When I called IDL (third party biller), we got through in a matter of minutes. The rep was very courteous and said we would receive credit in 1-2 billing periods. Hopefully we do! We get calls from these people CONSTANTLY. We are very adamant in our refusal of their product, and have asked repeatedly to be removed from their database. Yet days later, they call again. We are very accustomed to dealing with this type of company and have never agreed to anything! The author of "They Need to Pay Attention" is very misleading by making it sound like anyone who has received this charge agreed to it. In fact, my aunt who doesn't even own a computer, discovered this charge for online services on her personal phone bill. I wish to thank D from NY for the information on the company. I fully intend to contact them.

How to deal with this problem - by an MSNBC reporter

There was an excellent recent article by Bob Sullivan, an MSNBC reporter discussing this problem. The address is as follows:

http://www.msnbc.com/news/861995.asp?0sl=-43

We were able to prevent this charge from being placed on our bill by placing a "block" on our local phone bill.

By being extremely assertive Liberty Online agreed to remove the charges from our telephone bill but refused to send us a confirmation of the removal in writing.

We think that is very suspicious.

I was contacted by someone who said they were
with the yellow pages asking to confirm my
buisness name, address, phone number. I was told
this was our free online listing. I didnt think
about it at the time because we do have a ad in
our local yellow pages and figured it was part of
the service.

I opened our phone bill tonight and
found a extra charge of 30.85 from liberty online
services. with a contact number and a web address
( hbsweb.com) witch did not even open up.

I think this is wrong and not a way of doing
buisness. Its not right to tell someone here is
your free listing and then get charged for it.

I am also a victim of this issue. After a bit of research, I have uncovered the following info that may help you:

-ILD is a third party biller that has no link to Liberty Online Services, except that Liberty Online Services engages ILD for its billing.
-In order to ensure an open communications market the FCC requires local phone companies to accept charges from third party billers such as ILD. So while it makes sense that your local phone company should be able to block these fraudulent charges, they cannot by Law.
-Liberty Online Services targets business customers and tries to get them to sign up for the service by offering a free yello pages ad on the net.
-Liberty Online Services does indeed fraudulently charge customers. It is not ILD's fault.
-Liberty Online Services is owned by Global Asset Holdings, Inc. Here is the info:
