I have been a Hostgator Customer since 2009, attracted to them by their "Unlimited Disc Space"

Recently, while in the process of a move, Hostgator decides to inform me that while I have been storing things on my hosting account for 3 years, I am now using too much disc space and need to remove files from my account.

I guess "unlimited" doesn't go as far as it used to.

It turns out that in their TOS, they tell you that you cannot use your Unlimited Disc space to store files.
What can you use it for? Who knows. I guess you can use your Unlimited Disc space as bragging rights.

"If I were allowed to store stuff on it, I have an UNLIMITED HARD DRIVE... but I can't."

Was I upset? Of course I was, but I let them know that I could not remove 3 years worth of files in 48 hours because I was in the middle of a move and would be losing Internet soon. Besides, I have a business to run, and 230 some odd gigs of files was a lot to sift through, delete, etc.

To make a long story short, amidst problems of getting an Internet connection, multiple suspensions, and tedious snagging of important files, today I get a notice that I haven't removed enough files fast enough, and that they were permanently suspended my account, and I would be getting no refunds for the suspensions that I was experiencing.

Furthermore, I would no longer be able to get the files from my hosting account, and that I could basically kiss 3 years of backups, my company website, and my PR all to hell.

I can understand that they don't want people using Unlimited Storage as Unlimited Storage now that I've bounced around the web... but what I cannot understand is why they would continue to lie about it in their advertising, or treat customers in good standing so poorly when their own advertising practices are at fault for setting the wrong customer expectations.

Turns out, there are better companies with better reputations. BRainhost, DreamHost, and others.

I will NEVER make the mistake of using Hostgator ever again.
