HomeServe USA Repair Management sent me by mail a soliicitation to sign up for a home heating equipment service plan.  It looked like a bill,  obscured the name of their company (most notably on the return postage-paid envelope), and appeared to try to mimic the appearance of a renewal notice from a company that a recipient might previously have dealt with.  It solicited me to select a maintenance plan without a clear description of the nature of the offer (which in turn supported the appearance that this was a business with whom I already deal).  It solicited a credit card or bank number, and authorized recurrent billing or direct withdrawals from the bank account.  It arrived in early February, and urged a quick response within 30 days, creating a possibility of consumer confusion that heating service might be in jeopardy if one failed to respond.

 

This has all the earmarks of a deceptive seasonal offer, aimed at elderly people,  to create a false urgency that might otherwise counsel closer checking, for the purpose of securing a signed contract to buy something for which the customer might have no need or interest.
