You might be interested to know that HP (and by extension, Compaq) laptops have some of the highest hardware failure rates of all, according to a report by SquareTrade. I'll provide a link to a web page that discusses this report but ROR may redact it. If they do, simply Google "gizmodo laptop failure rates" and check out the first link.

Did you know that there are only a few laptop manufacturers in the world and companies such as HP, Dell or Alienware simply build on top of these cases and slap their names on top? You may well buy another brand of laptop that comes from the same factory.
On top of this, consumer grade laptops have a higher failure rate.
I don't see what Office Depot did wrong, your computer was outside of their return policy. It's not their fault.
You might consider buying your next laptop at Costco where the warranty is doubled or use a credit card that provides an extended warranty. There is also the option of buying an extended warranty for your laptop. If a laptop is crucial to you, you might even consider a back up. I myself use two laptops and a netbook simply because I cannot be without a portable computer.

OK, so you'll never buy a Compaq again. What kind of computer will you buy? HP, Acer, Gateway/eMachines, Dell, you name it. They'd all do the same thing Compaq did.
A warranty is a warranty and when it runs out, you're SOL no matter which company you buy from.
