I got taken in, too, and have had to file a police report, put a fraud alert on my credit report, and close my checking account.

A very nice teen came to my door in November, 2007. He was raising money for a home schooler's trip to Washington D.C. He also said he lived down my very long street and seemed to know a lot about my neighbors. He even described his own house. Although I'd never met the family, I thought I knew who he was. I bought two subscriptions and thought it was strange that he wanted a check for each of them. When I told him I thought the cost was excessive, he said that the excess was the fund-raising part, and to compensate, he and his brother would return the next day and do some chores for me. He also "forgot" to tell me about the 3-day cooling off period, which is in very tiny print on the receipts. He also forgot to put a date on the receipts.

At that point I became suspicious and sent the cancellation notice by mail. (There's no fax number,) along with a letter stating why I was cancelling and telling them that I was stopping payment on the checks. When I heard nothing from them, I followed up with another letter. The checks went uncashed and no magazines appeared, nor was I contacted.

Four months later, they created two drafts from my checks for MORE money. (Changing the amount enabled them to bypass my bank's stop payment software.) I saw these drafts online, printed them out and called my bank's fraud department. They knew all about this company and said that GLC would try over and over to debit my account and that I should close my checking account ASAP, which I did. I also put a fraud alert on my credit reports and filed a police report.

I thought I had taken care of everything, but several days ago (now FIVE months later) one of the magazines, Reader's Digest, was delivered. I have now been exchanging emails with their circulation department, and their replies have been laughable. They told me that the subscription was paid for and that I should be receiving it soon. I sent the magazine back, told them I had not paid for it, and that they were being defrauded, too. They don't seem to care. Probably the second magazine will arrive soon and I'll have to deal with their circulation, too.
