In Aug of 99, I entered into a contract to have my windows replaced with new vinyl windows manufactured by Great Lakes Windows, 10 windows for $3000.

Two bathroom windows were to be frosted, when they were installed one of the bathroom windows were the incorrect type(clear).

Gary Goeckerman, an independent seller of the windows had to reorder, I said fine but I am not paying full price, I withheld $500, until the window is replaced. It took over a year to get the right window installed and when he finally delivered the correct window, he left it on the front stoop and the vinyl edge was cracked.

I told him that if he sent me the warranty paperwork I would overlook the crack in the window frame. He told me to send the remainder of the money and I would get my warranty.

I asked him to overlook the $500 dollars since he has not made good on his contract. I have called the manufacturer of the windows and they say I am on my own, independent contractors.

#2Consumer Comment

Sat, January 18, 2003

As a former salesman for window and siding products, I think the following guidelines for consumers would be helpful to consumers on your website. In the last 5 years, there have been major advances in the preparation of glass that goes into windows. Few companies keep up with these advances and will not tell the consumer about them. Only the company that sells that glass will demonstrate it to the consumer. Spectrally Selected Glazings, are nothing more than thin coatings of metal, commonly (Lead and Silver) that are melted onto the surface of the glass. These are called "LowE" or "LowE" Squared. LowE means that one side of one pane of glass is coated. LowE Squared means that all sides of both panes of glass are coated. These coatings provide significant protection by reflecting heat back into the home. LowE Squared is the best and will give a significant reduction in your heating bill when combined with a "stout" window frame and a "SuperSpacer" type of window spacer. The SuperSpacer window spacer is placed between the two panes of glass and is non-conductive. Consumers should be aware that companies will attempt to subsititue glass of inferior quality and it is almost impossible to detect. The only way for the average consumer to determine the effectiveness of the window is to obtain a heat meter, measuring BTU's per hour from a place like Radio Shack. Typically, a non-treated 2 pane window with alum spacer, will register, when a standard heat lamp is used and shined through it, a setting of 180 Btu. A treated LowE 2 pane window will register at 125 Btu. A LowE Squared 2 pane window will register at 64 Btu. Some companies sell windows that are made of recycled plastic. This can be seen in the bluish white appearance of the window frame and should definately be avoided. Window frames come with a variety of inside supports for the sash. Metal bars, inside and insulated away from the glass are a good investment. Stay away from Foam, which is given as a insulator...but provides little in actual insulation compared to dead air space. Never purchase a window with metal bars between the window panes. Metal conducts and defeats the insulating purpose of the glass. Never purchase a window with shutters inside between the two window panes. The shutters will heat up and pass that heat directly into the home. Hope these hints help!
