I have a Visa card thru Fleet - I noticed charges appearing on my statement from Fleet Id Defender - We never ordered this serice, they just took it upon themselves to bill us for it. However they claim that they are seperate from Fleet Id Defender, even though Fleet's customer srvc rep was able to transfer me to the Fleet Id Defender rep. Make sense? Here is the letter I sent them. I just want others to know what they are capable of. To whom it may concern, After several attempts to solve this matter through your customer service department with no avail, I am burdened with having to write this letter to bring resolution to this matter. On 3/11/03 and on 4/08/03 we were debited 11.99 from Fleet Id Defender. We never ordered this service. Your customer service agent said that Fleet and Fleet Id Defender were separate divisions, so I was told to call another number to dispute the charges. When I contacted them the rep claimed that someone gave a verbal approval for this service. I asked them to play back the approval, but, of course, they could not! I have been a preferred customer of Fleet's, and I am outraged that you conduct business in this manner. It is within my right to request that Fleet (not Fleet Id Defender) reverse these charges from my account. I did not give authorization for this service. In fact, we have tele-zapper on our phone, so we do not ever talk to solicitors. This is fraud (or to say the least deceptive sales practices), and I intend to expose your company. I am sending a copy of this letter to the Better Business Bureau, Visa Corporation (as you are in violation of the Visa guidelines by not reversing these charges as I requested) and to the Rip-off reports.com website. When I requested that the charges be reversed by Fleet (rather than me calling Fleet Id Defender) I was told that Fleet cannot do that as required by the Visa guidelines because Fleet could not investigate themselves! What a contradiction to the fact that I was told Fleet and Fleet Id Defender are separate. A Palm Harbor, Florida

Fleet ID defender is a service offered through our automated system, customer service and mailings that helps protect people from the crime of identity theft. From my experience most people don't listen to the entire menu when calling an automated system and accidentally enroll in a product or service, requesting more information and then forget about it because it was not the original reason for the call. If that were the case there would be no tape recording of the call, because there was nothing to record but a 'beep' possibly the verbal approval. The service is provided by Encore marketing. I don't know if they are a sister company or if we subcontract to them. In any case, Fleet Bank, Fleet Credit Card Services and possibly Encore marketing are all part of the Fleet family and that might explain why Fleet cannot investigate itself. Because even if they are seperate entities they are still owned by the same corporation. Fleet ID Defender is only the description of the service on the bill, that does not necessarily mean that Fleet Credit Card Services put that charge on your account. I understand your frustration with the situation but I assure you that there are no deceptive sale practices. I'm sorry that you feel the need to expose Fleet, when in reality there is nothing to expose, only a misunderstanding or miscommunication.
