I ordered the Fix-It scratch remover kit (Simonize automotive scratch removing cream, Home Scratch removal cream, power buffer kit w/soft touch pads, Micro-fiber polishing cloth, plus the free turbo car vac) over the phone after I saw a Billy Mays infomercial about it on TV. The deal was $19.95 for the kit, 9.95 shipping and handling. But wait! If I ordered right away, I'd get a second kit, absolutely free! I'd just pay shipping and handling. The automated voice response system took my order and credit card number.

A few weeks later my order arrived. The invoice listed all the items shipped, but curiously, no price or amount was listed.

So imagine my surprise when my credit card bill arrived with a charge of $75.70. I called the company to report the error. A very professional and reasonably polite sounding woman informed that there was no error, that each separate piece carried its own separate shipping and handling fee, and that the amount was correct.

I pointed out that neither the infomercial, the voice response ordering system, nor the invoice with the package mentioned anything about such exorbitant fees, and if I had known about them, I would not have placed the order. I was told that I could return the items, at my expense, and that the price of the items would be refunded, but not the shipping and handling fee.

I replied that I could do that, but that I charged a shipping and handling fee of $55.70. The long pause on the other end of the line confirmed that my sense of humor was not appreciated, or that she didn't get the joke. In fact, it had become clear that the joke was on me.

Memo to the Fix-It folks: 'Caveat Emptor' shouldn't be a part of your operating business plan. If it is, you're not in business. You're thieves.
