In February 2001 I contacted Fingerhut by phone (back when you could still speak to a human being at the company) and asked for a balance on my account because I had taken out a consolidation loan to pay off my bills. I was told that my balance was $92.76. I arranged to pay this amount via a "check-by-phone" and I was under the impression that this would clear my account with Fingerhut.

Eight months passed and in October 2001 I received a bill from Fingerhut stating that I owed $92.76 plus $125.31 in late fees. I called Fingerhut immediately and was told that my original payment was not able to be processed. After verifying my bank account information, it was discovered that they left one number out of my bank account number that was presented to my bank. Therefore my bank would not honor the check.

We straightened out my bank account number and the transaction was reprocessed and cleared my bank account on October 11, 2001.

The customer service representative then told me that I was responsible for the $125.31 in late fees. I expressed my dissatisfaction to the customer rep and told her that I didn't feel that I should owe late fees over there mistake and I wasn't paying.

Apparently the late fees were sent to collections and they added it to my credit report. In February 2004 I was denied credit and decided to get a copy of my report to see what was on it. I saw the Fingerhut account listed as "charged off" and a balance of $125. Also ther was a NCO Financial Systems for Fingerhut with $125.31 as amount due.

I contacted NCO and mailed them a check in the amount of $125.31 which cleared my account on 3/3/2004. Again I thought this account was now cleared. Wrong!

In October 2004 I began a re-investigation for my DOE clearance and when the agent doing my clearance pulled my credit report, there was Fingerhut with $125 owed. In addition to that there now was a Jefferson Capital entry with a Fingerhut account number. The Jefferson Capital entry says "date reported 07/2004", "balance amount $0", "date of last payment 02/2004", and "120 days past due".

I am now at risk of losing my security clearance and my job and there is no way to contact these people by phone to find out what is going on. I have tried for years to satisfy this account to no avail. It seems like every time I make one payment something else is added on.

This company or companies, I have a feeling there all one, seems a little shady. Every time I have had a new dealing with them it seems there address and phone numbers are different. Now they have gone to the old automated phone system and there seems to be no way to clear this matter up.

I have wriiten a letter and sent copies of cancelled checks. We'll see if I ever hear from them.

First off, the guy doing your security clearence is a moron. Obviously, if you have 0 balance, you can't be 120 days past due. But, I would print out all the reports pertaining to Fingerslut, and give them to this guy. If he can't figure the pattern out, demand that someone do an updated clearence on him, because he has an obvious mental condition!
