"DreamHost" is among the worst web hosting services I have ever come across! They permit users of their service to post defamatory and harassing content about innocent people on websites being hosted through the "DreamHost" network and all complaints receive an unfeeling, generic response. The person who responds calls himself "Nate Y" and he states: "While we understand and empathize with your situation, I am afraid that we are unable to censor or otherwise assert editorial control over our customers' site content.

We do not tell customers what to write, or how to exercise their speech." How convenient! Clearly, they have no idea what it's like to have someone attack them online and this is why they take such a lax approach to complaints of this nature. Unless it's happening to THEM, it doesn't really matter a whole lot if someone else is getting abused through their service. The generic message from this "Nate Y" ends with: "We will work expediently with any subpoenas, injunctions or other court orders that come in from law enforcement with jurisdiction in Los Angeles, CA USA. I'm sorry I could not be of more help."

Oh, how nice! So, unless the complaints come in from California jurisdiction, there's not much else you can do if you happen to live outside that area. The apology "Nate Y" gave is just a tactic designed to pacify me also and it doesn't mean a d**n thing! All of these individuals running "DreamHost" need to get on the ball and start REALLY taking other people's feelings into consideration. They also need to take complaints seriously instead of copping out like they do by refusing to take any responsibility for the abusive content they currently allow users of their service to post on websites being hosted through their service.

Granted, they may not directly be responsible for the content itself that their users post but they DO have a duty to protect the rights of innocent people by taking appropriate action against those who publish abusive material through their service. By taking a "hands off" approach to legitimate complaints, they are in a very real sense supporting abuse which in turn sends a clear message to the offenders that this sort of behavior is OK even though it is NOT! I wouldn't recommend this service to any DECENT people because only abusers seem to rate high on the scale with "DreamHost."
