Here is a summary of what happened, and the damage done:

1. We hired David Hall on December 18 as you can see on Thumbtack. In the text on Thumbtack, he said to text or call him directly which I did.

2. He sent me an estimate for the bathroom via email and it is dated December 26, 2018. We told him we would like to start the remodel in May. I will send you a copy of all the text messages which I organized into a word document so that you can easily follow them.

3. Over the next few months, he did several small projects around the house. He would always talk about being a Christian man, he was here on time and he really gained our trust. By May, we were ready to go as you will see in the text messages.

4. In the bathroom estimate, you will see that he estimates 7-10 days for completion of the project. He started the project Monday, May 13, 2019 and walked out on the job Sunday, June 30, 2019. This is obviously well beyond the time he told us he would be here. I did ask him to come back and complete the project a day after he walked out. His response was that we would have to pay him the rest up front and give him our homeowners policy. He claims to have tripped over a scooter in our garage but as you will see in the text messages he never went to the doctor.

5. I sent him and email with copies of the text message word document I created and a demand letter for him to return and do the work. He never gave me his mailing address so I could not mail him a copy. I have forwarded these documents to you via email.

6. At this point, I contacted 4 contractors- two of them on Thumbtack. All four have said that the bathroom needs to be completely redone. Even though the project is 75% completed, the work is so poor that it would need to be torn down to studs and completely redone. They all said nothing could be salvaged and to make matters worse I would now have to retile the entire bathroom floor, get new faucets, sinks and marble vanity tops, get a new mirror, and have our carpets clean and clothes are dry cleaned. This was never something we intended to do. He damaged the tile on his first day of work (you will see pictures of this chips left on the floor because he did not cover the floor when he was doing the demolition) and tearing out the shower floor will cause further damage to the floor. Both E&A Remodeling and Reformed Home Services said you may contact them for further detail about the work David Hall did and what it will take to repair it.

7. Here is a summary of what you will see in the pictures: a. There was a general lack of care when David was working i. DAMAGES

1. Tile Floor a. Our bathroom tile floor was in fine shape and we did not intend to retile it. b. He damaged our tile floor on the first day of demo because he did not cover/protect the floor when he was doing the demo. I have pictures of 3 tiles he chipped as he did not cover the floor c. I had to bring this up to him in a text-see text message document sent under separate cover.

2. Carpet in the bedroom a. He did not cover the bedroom carpet with anything to protect it until I got frustrated-see text messages document b. I sat and hand cleaned my bedroom carpet for 4 hours and I am the one that covered it. I used Glad press and seal (normally used for food) to cover my carpet (see pictures of plastic on the carpet that is Glad press and seal). His contribution was a drop cloth that really does very little to protect the carpet as it does not stay put and does nothing to seal all the dirt and dust off the carpet.

3. Marble vanity tops a. The marble vanity tops will now need to be replaced as they are deeply scratched because he did not cover/protect them when he was working on tiling the wall behind the vanity. You will see the scratches in the picture we took. He stood on them and placed his tools on them without covering them.

4. Sinks a. Both stoppers have been taken out of the sinks and not replaced and the sinks are all scratched up.

5. Faucets a. They are both loose and now leaking water

6. Mirror a. He broke the vanity mirror-see text message- we were nice enough to not ask him to pay for the whole thing!!! Not sure what we were thinking….see text document.

7. Clothing a. He did not put plastic up or even shut the door to our master closet even though I kept asking him too. Everything in out closet is saturated with dust. ii. ALL WORK HAS TO BE REDONE-NOTHING CAN BE SALVAGED

1. We have a double shower

2. The tile is not level horizontally or vertically a. You can see pictures from the side of the large metal plates that go to the shower controls and they do not lay flat because the tile is not horizontally lever. There are large gaps on both plates. b. The tile it not vertically level- there large asymmetric gaps between all tiles on the top and on the sides

3. Cracked Tile a. Almost every tile is cracked from the way he cut the tile

4. Plastic Edging a. Because the tile was cut so poorly, he then tried to go back after the fact and use plastic edging to cover it up. Because the edging was not placed first, there are huge gaps between the edging and the tile

5. Decorative Tile a. The decorative edging at the top is completely different thicknesses in different areas as shown by the pictures with the tape measure

6. Shower lip a. The tile on the transition between the shower floor and the bathroom floor is not done property. Both E&A and Reformed Home said they had never seen anything like that.

7. Shower floor is not level and does not drain properly a. The shower floor is not level and can be seen by the standing water that remains when I tested the water with Dave standing there on June 30. Dave originally told us his partner did not level his side properly and that it would have to be redone. Then later he tried to tell us that my son caused it to be unlevel because he stood on if after he grouted the tile. The entire shower floor is wavy and not poured properly this has nothing to do with my son. I checked with the other contractors and they said it is completely an issue of how the original concrete floor was poured and has nothing to do with my son standing on the tile 2 weeks after the concrete was poured.

8. Cubby a. Looks terrible and tile is done incorrectly.

9. Shower jets a. The shower jets are installed a foot away from center line??? I asked him about this when he was cutting the tile and he said it would be fine. The jets even though they angle are so far away that they do not even hit you when you are taking a shower. He also installed the bottom 3 jets on both sides with some kind of metal extension so they stick out further on the wall. For some reason on both showers he did not add the same extension piece to the top jets so they are smooched into the wall. When I asked him about these items and the shower floor on June 30, he walked out on the job.

10. The shower drain in not centered.

11. The shower bench is not centered.

12. Rain head shower a. The rain head shower head pipe on both sides is not perpendicular to the ceiling. Instead both pipes are coming out of the ceiling at an angle. b. The rain head shower heads and the regular shower heads are not in alignment.

13. The tile is hung out of line and is not patterned correctly. a. There are many places where the tile does not line up well at the seams.

14. The tile work everywhere has large gaps. In summary, to say we are in a state of shock would be an understatement. We were very kind and patient despite the fact that he damaged many things and was taking so long. When I finally did try to bring up my concerns on June 30, he got angry and walked out on the job. We are now out almost $25,000 dollars.
