When I saw this report I remembered that my aunt had a 2000 Durango and I'm pretty sure that she had her vehicle in the shop at one point for a couple of recalls, though I can't remember what they were for. If you go to Dodge's main site and select owner services from the top menu, they have a recall notification system available. I distinctly remember tons of people had problems with the steering on these models (i owned a 2000 Ram) and wonder if a recall was ever issued for this issue. You guys with problems should check, because if there was such a recall, the repairs should be free and if I'm not mistaken, you can get reimbursed if you already paid for the covered work to be done. Now that I think about it, the original poster probably shouldn't check the site though. If there was a recall for her problem one on her vehicle, she may be found responsible for the accident...She should be careful, or at least talk to an attorney first.

My 2000 durango steering failed while I was pulling a boat on a winding road and I almost wrecked no warning at all. I had to replace the power steering pump the shaft on the pump was broke in half. If a woman ws driving some one could of wrecked or worst yet killed. This vehicle has had numerous problems leaking soft plugs in the motor, front wheel bearings, tie rods, u-joints, rear-end, front brakes/rotors, shocks, belt tensioner, clutch fan, themostat, ball joints. I have had dodge products for years and will never buy another one. I consider it junk and it has been for sale for months now.

Last Friday, August 13th, my wife was turning right to our driveway, she pulled the steering all the way to the right and when she's trying to make the front wheels straight the steering failed. I checked the fluid and any leaks did not find any obvious problem. I took it to Framingham Dodge and they said it was power steering pump it will cost $500+ to replace with remanufactured compare to the original part the pump alone quoted me for $600 plus labor.

I am also a victim of a lemon durango sold to me by alberic colon dealer in puerto rico...the vehicle was purchase brand new for a total of 46,000 dollars in the year 2000; and as early as 2001, I started to have overheating problems. I have taken the vehicle to service for the same problem a total of 6 times, and requested an exchange, however they refuse to negotiate, stating that the problem could be fix...I have allowed them to fix the problem however upon repair; the overheating re-occurrs. I am now running on my extended warranty, and currently my case is in arbitration with the dept. of DACO, futhermore, the vehicle is overheating once again, and Alberic colon dealer refuse to repair it until my arbitration healing is heard. Please help me with some advise on this matter.

Well, it looks like Dodge has a problem with the power steering pumps in their Durangos. I also had a broken power steering pump in my 1999 Durango. It happened while backing out of a parking space. It was nothing that we did. It was a typical thing, backing up and turning the wheel and then it got too hard to turn. Luckily my father in law is a machanic so we just paid for the pump but still its something that shouldn't have happened and we got stuck with the bill. Also, my father in law had said, in his 40 years of working on vehicles, had never seen a pump break like that, on any vehicle. I love my Durango but if you intent to buy one, ask them about the pump!

Just recently, on October 12, as I was backing out of a parking spot, my power steering in my 2000 Dodge Durango failed! It was all I could do to straighten the automobile out and drive it ot my home. I had to get my dad to drive it to a mechanic shop the next morning because it was impossible for me to turn the steering wheel. The mechanic found that the shaft in the power steering pump was completely broken (disengaged), so he replaced it at the tune of $200.00. When I picked it up and drove it home, just as I got close to my house, the power steering went stiff again. Back to the mechanic, he now finds that some line is messed up in the steering and the bill for the repair is going to be over $700.00, and he's cutting me a good deal because I know him!! He says the part alone is $500.00. I have driven many different types of vehicles and this is the worst problem I have ever encountered with a relatively newer model vehicle. I hate Dodge vehicles now and I will never buy another Dodge or a Chrylser product as long as I live. I feel like there should be a recall on "something" related to whatever makes the power steering fail in a Durango, because I can see by the numerous reports of it, that I am not the only victim!!

I have a 2001 Dodge Durango with a steering problem. I noticed it was getting hard to steer as if the power steering fluid was low. I checked it and found the resivor to be full. Upon further investigation and the dealer checking my steering they found my steering colum to be worn.
My dealership replaced the "Worn colum" for a total of $1,054.34, also at the same time they found another part down inside that needs to be replaced for a total of $200.00 + which this part is on order.
My symptoms were hard to steer and a rattling noice when shaking the steering wheel fast to the left and right or turning. I called Daimler and they stated since there is no recall on this I have to pay the bill. This is sorry and unfair and unjust. My dealership worked with me to the best they could, I do have to commend them for this action. I feel the part was defective at factory installation and in time went bad and should be replaced by Diamler Chrysler since there are allot of the same problems with other individuals Durangos or Dakotas. Anyone else with the same problem speak out and let it be heard so we all can get this fixed before someone could be injured or killed in an accident due to faulty steering. Thanks
