In May of 2003 we bought a brand new Dodge Ram 1500 Quad Cab pick up. At first we were thrilled with the vehicle. Then came the problems.

A year later, with approximately 25,000 miles on it, the check engine light came on and the truck started dying out in the middle of the road and running really rough. We took it in to the dealership where we bought it and they had to replace the heads. It was still running rough when we got it back, 2 weeks later.

Then, at 27,000 miles the same thing happened again. AGAIN, they replaced the heads and yet again when we got it back it still wasn't running right.

A few months later the check engine light comes on and it started dying again, all the time. This time when we took it in, they were really sick of seeing it, and us. They claimed that the cause of the problem this time was contaminated fuel and repaired it as a goodwill gesture. They accused us of everything from filling up the truck out of a farm tank (we do not even know of anyone around here that even has a gas farm tank) to putting dirty water in it to get it to blow up so we could get a new one, neither of which is true. They brought out this jar of what looked like pond water with a little oil in it. It didn't even smell like gas, which is what they claimed it was.

After going through all of this with them, the truck still wasn't running right at all. I didn't even get a few miles from the dealership until the check engine light came on again. When I turned around to take it back, the light went off. So, I figured it was just a malfunction and it corrected itself.

Here we are a year later and the check engine light comes and goes intermitantly. This last time it was on about a week so we called and got it in the shop again. This time, it seems that all they did was hurry up and quick fix just to get it out of there becuase we hadn't even made it down 2 miles away when it died on us and the whole thing started shaking to the point it was hard to keep it on the road.

I am tired of dealing with this company. I have emailed them and called them on this issue. Their response is always that the service department has rectified the problem when in fact, they have not. They are skirting around the issue of repair and only seem to rig it up to run for a while by resetting the computer.

I have contacted a lawyer on this, but I am waiting to hear back from them regarding my current complaint and my request for a buy back under the lemon law. If they refuse to buy their lemon back, well, then here comes the lawsuit.

Also, on a side note: DO NOT KEEP YOUR REPAIR RECORDS IN THE VEHICLE. I did this, and the somehow turned up missing after I mentioned the lemon law....gee, I wonder why?

An independent shop might be of some help here

at least they should be able to let you know what is really going on. Many shops have access to recalls, tsbs, etc. that the dealer sometimes "forgets" to mention when they are sick of dealing with your vehicle. Try calling a few different shops and see if you can find any info about the constant problems you are having. Even another dealership might be more helpful. You should be able to find a shop that is aware of this problem and can help, at least as far as knowing what is really going on so you can be on the same level when dealing with the dealership. Finding the right shop may take a little time, as many will want to try to fix the problem, but find one that is already aware of the problem from other customers, etc.

I lost one of my papers too and I kept them in the arm rest console of my Durango...but all you have to do is stand over your service advisor and have them print those suckers out. Did you win a settlement or not? I am currently in pre-litigation with Daimler Chrysler and need info....

Follow-Up Burnt Valves at 41,000 miles

Seems as the above problems has more developments!!! The valve job and replacement has now turned into a replacement of both head assemblies, complete with new parts, as well as fuel injectors, and WHATEVER else is needed to make the repairs. My loss of use of the vehicle has gone from 4 day to unknown, as some of the needed parts are on back-order (I wonder why their is such a demand for parts for an engine that Chrysler no longer uses?) All of this with Chrysler footing the bill on an out of warranty vehicle!!! I have searched online regarding this problem and can find next to nothing, BUT I have to seriously wonder WHY IS CHRYSLER paying for this kind of major repairs??? I now strongly suspect that the problems stems from the manufacturing proccess instead of a dealer caused problem.

Who is at fault? Chrysler or Chrysler Dealership

You might want to have a chat with your dealer and have him discuss this problem with Chrysler. My situation is similar to your problems and here is what is being done. I purchased a 2002 Dodge Ram 1500 SLT Quad Cab in Sept 2002, with the 5.9 L V8 and equipped for trailer towing. I have been thrilled with the vehicle and it has been my pride and joy. The vehicle has had good maintenance, oil and filter every 3-4,000 mile, three changes in differential fluid, transmission flush and fill with filters and adjustment (preventive maintenance for towing). In preparation for a busy summer and 10-12,000 miles of towing this summer, I took the vehicle in 4 weeks ago for all the work I thought would need done before the end of summer (Current Mileage 41,000): 1. New front brakes 2. Change differential fluid 3. Automatic Transmission Tune-Up 4. Engine Tune-Up 5. Throttle Body Cleaning I got the truck back and 3 days later left on a 1500 mile trip, 1 gas fill up and 350 miles later I stopped for the night. The next morning, the truck was idling rough but smoothed out when it warmed up. During the course of the trip this continued to be the routine each morning, as well as a loss of power in the mountains and towing gas mileage dropping 25% after the tune-up. On returning home, 12 days after the work, the truck was idling extremely rough the next morning with a distinct loss of power and the engine light came on, I spoke with the Chrysler Service at the dealer where it was purchased and service and took it back to them. Talk about "Blowing smoke", right off the bat I was told I had probably gotten some contaminated fuel. The engine diagnostic showed Multiple Cylinder misfire and "possible dirt" (If I am not mistaken the OBD cannot diagnose dirt). They "pressure cleaned my fuel injectors at no charge, as a goodwill gesture" and told me if it continued that they would have to remove and clean the fuel tank and fuel lines, " costly job". Guess what, 2 days later the engine was idling rough again with the engine light on. Again I took it back for service, this time it was diagnosed with a bad spark plug (P 0302) and I was told it would be fine. Whoops!!! 2 days later while getting ready for a 1,200 mile trip, it started idling rough and the engine light came on. Without calling I took it straight to the Service Department and asked for the Service Manager. I took him out to start the truck and explained the recent history. He agreed that it was running rough and took it in to have a mechanic check it. The Service Manager came back an hour later with "good news and bad news"!!!!! (Now remember this vehicle has 41K miles, an excellent service record, and is out of warranty) "You have 3 burnt valves and at least 2 bad fuel injectors, but I have talked with 5 people at Chrysler and they have agreed to pay for 'out of warranty valve job and fuel injector replacement' and we'll supply you with a loaner car. All of this will be at 'no out of pocket expense to you". Now the Service manager knew I had a trip scheduled for the next day that would cost me about $ 2000 if I could not make it with my truck and trailer. He told me to go ahead with the trip that it would not hurt the truck any further, and scheduled the truck in for the work the day after I was to return. I returned a day early and took the vehicle to independent shops, for the first time in my life I heard the same thing from 2 different mechanics. 1. Their OBD readings on my vehicle were the same: a. P0300 - Multiple Cylinder misfire 1. P0301 - Cylinder 1 misfire 2. P0302 - Cylinder 2 misfire 3. P0307 - Cylinder 7 misfire 2. None had ever heard of a vehicle burning up valves at 40,000 miles, stating this was something that did not happen until at least twice that mileage. 3. After starting and driving my vehicle, neither shop felt there was a valve problem since the vehicle only "misses and/or dies" when cold. 4. They all felt that the idea of "Chrysler Corporations paying for an out or warranty repair such as this with a loaner vehicle included and no 'out of pocket' expense to me" was very strange. 5. The biggest surprise came when they both asked me "What the Chrysler Dealer had done for me for what they had charged for the tune-up. When I answered a "tune-up", they showed me the plugs on 2 of the supposedly misfiring cylinders and told me they were the original equipment plugs, that plugs even a month old would not be rusted like those were, and though the insulators and electrodes were clean, the electrodes were rounded and not flat like a new plug. This WAS a dealership that I felt I could trust!!! I guess I'll find out soon, I am due to get the vehicle back in 2 days. Will post an update after I get it. BUT at least no one is try to charge me for these repairs.
