There may be others who had this problem. run a web search for hidden warrany and technical service bulletins (TSB)find the web site for the highway safety administration and do a web search on TSB's concerning your make and model, there is also mycarstas.com and allcar that sells the TSB's, get the TSB numbers from the Highway Safety folks web site and call Chysler they sell them for $2.00 each, the Highway web site just gives the title and not the meat of the article. Find hidden warrenties or goodwill warrenties or sue them in small claims court.

I've never heard of a problem with Chrysler engines breaking camshafts or wearing out the lobes. Who told you this needed replacement? Go get another opinion. Do not tell the next shop ANYTHING other than what your complaint is. And no, your complaint is NOT the cam is damaged. Tell the next shop as little as possible and let them diagnose it. Do not go to the next dealership for this. Your VIN has already been logged into the system along with their diagnosis. Go to an independent shop, a small one, not a large chain. The larger ones are also on the "link". Find one that has a good reputation. Try a NAPA Auto Care Center. They are all independent and must pass strict ethics codes to qualify. The price seems extraordinarily high considering it came with an overhead cam engine. Doesn't take much time to swap out and you don't need to do much more than take off the valve cover and exchange the camshaft. In most cases, the timing belt can be left in place while this is done. It's more likely the camBELT broke. That would bring the price way up there as it would cause valves to be bent. Good luck.
