The LA Times reported this theft on August 2, 2008 http://www.latimes.com/business/la-fi-arrest2-2008aug02,0,7330731.story

Countrywide dated its letter Sept 6 and we received it Sept 9. Why wait a whole month to communicate with customers? Both our names are on the Mtg Loan with mine first yet, only my husband received the letter. Why didn't we both get a letter? The "special services hotline" phone number at the bottom of the letter, (866) 451-5895, is staffed by a "specially trained representative" ready to assist me. Neither the person answering nor his supervisor could tell me anything. They knew nothing: "This is only a hotline number, we can't help you." They did connect me to Customer Service at (866) 767-4101. They couldn't help except to repeat the information on the letter. They gave me the number for ConsumerInfo.com (866) 369-0422.

The recording said due to a high volume of calls it was no longer taking messages, call later. The fact that neither of our names appeared on the letter, missing information and vague language (eg. your personal information "may have been sold"), fake 'hotline' and useless customer 'service' personnel further errode my confidence in Countrywide.

How many people received this letter? Would Countrywide be accountable and actually pay for any time and expense I may incur as a result of their sloppy business and employee vetting practices? Is this true or is it a marketing gimmick using scare tactics for ConsumerInfo.com?

The Attorney Generals of Illinois, California and Florida are suing Countrywide for fraudulent lending practices as late as July 2008 http://blogs.tampabay.com/buzz/2008/07/mccollum-sues-c.html

I'll be sending a letter to the IL Attorney General's Office, the Better Business Bureau and another similar consumer site: Consumerist.com. http://consumerist.com/5032665/former-countrywide-employee-arrested-for-stealing-selling-customer-identities

There are lots of smart, fearless people who will work to protect our rights! Keep up the good work. Thanks for the RipOff Report forum.
