I received a call today, Saturday June 18th, from an associate at Luebke, Baker and Associates. The associate at this collections agency explained that they were calling to collect on an outstanding amount on behalf of Consolidated Media Services. They claimed that I owed a total of $285 for an agreement from back in April 2002.

First off, the agreement was that 8 different magazines were to be delivered for a period of 3 years. 3 out of 8 different Magazines were never delivered from the start. The magazines also stopped coming after about a year and half.

Secondly, they claim that I was contacted on numerous occasions to make payment, however, I received NOT one phone call or written request for payment. Now after three years and out of the blue, I am contacted by a collections agency to make good on this payjment. I've tried contacting the company directly, but always get a voicemail without any kind greeting. The Manager at Lubke, Baker, and Associates decided to drop the payment from $285 to $142.50. I have never heard of a collections agency dropping the amount owed.

My credit is impeccable, and now I'm a afraid that this company may smear my overall credit rating because of their questionable business practices and for a mere $150. This has been one of the most frustrating experiences but am looking at it as a lesson learned. I know now never to agree to deals offered by telemarketers. It is unfortunate that Consolidate Media Services has put a bad name on all companies soliciting business over the phone.

Creditors drop the amount all the time - get in writing

Collection agents will reduce the balance owed on nearly ANY debt. Basically, collecting $150 is better than collecting 0 dollars. I would suggest this, before you pay, get in writing that it will not be reported to your credit. That collection agency does not care about your credit report. In the mind of the collection agent, it's bring on the next deadbeat.
