On Sunday (03/03/02) after more than an entire hour of debating about down payment , monthly payments , duration of the lease contract, and number of miles allow in a year among more issues I decided to take home (lease) a NEW Jetta 2002. I did not know at that point what a nightmare I was putting myself into.

Right after I left the dealership, on my way home I noticed the car had some kind of transmission problem. I was astonished, this was a new car, Volkswagen Jetta 2002, with just 17 miles on it, how come it had a problem with the transmission, that was hard to believe, but unfortunately it was true. I wanted to make a U turn and go back to the dealer but I was to late, and they were probably closed already. The next day (Monday 03.04,02) a day I was supposed to be at work by the way, I went back to the dealer. I looked for the sales guy who had sold me the vehicle the day before, when I found him, I explained to him what was going on. This guy called the dealer's manager and we all agree to go for a ride with one of the dealer's technicians to see the nature of the problem. The technician and I got in the car, after just 2 blocks I was able to show him the problem the car had and he was able to measure and record it with his computer equipment. As I suspected, the car had a transmission problem, he ensured. What was a real breaking news was when the guy said that Volkswagen, knew about this problem and that they were working on it, this was unbelievable, they knew the car had a problem and they did not tell me about it. My felt absolutely frustrated, how things like this happens, how knowing about the problem they put people's life in danger without any remorse.

On top of all my disappointment the dealer's manager started to try to convince me that the problem could be fixed and the car will be ok. How are you going to buy something, pay for it more than 19000 dollars and let someone to convince you that it can be fix and it will be ok, it sounds like a joke.

To increase my surprise and disappointment they asked me to put my name on a list of people that had they same problem, kind of a complain list that was supposed to be sent to Volkswagen. That meant I wasn't the only one in this situation, there were more people like myself going through this problem. I told the dealer's manager that I like the car very much that I wanted the car but I wanted it without the problem. That if I would've wanted a car with transmission problems I would've gone to a used car dealer instead and I would have faced the consequences of buying a used car, but this was different scenario.

After a long discussion, they (the manager and the sales guy) agreed that they will replace my car , but there was a problem, they did not have a similar car in the dealer , they would have to search for the exact car in other places, and this might take up to a whole week. I did not have any problem waiting as long as I had a car to go to work every day until my NEW car arrive. I was in for another big surprise. With a really happy face the dealer's manager told me to keep the car a had, the one with the problem, the one I was trying to replace, for the week I was supposed to wait, because they did not have any other cars available, and all the ones they have available for renting, had the same problem that the one I had!!!!!!!. Once again, how things like this can ever happen?

I told the guy (manager) that I did not feel safe in the car, and less now that a technician had said that the car had a transmission problem. I also told him that I had to drive almost 100 miles to get to work, and that I was worry about my security and the security of others. He ensured me that the problem the car had was a minor problem, that security was not compromised, and that everything was going to be just find. I did not have any other choice. In fear but without any other possibility I got in the car and drove away, praying nothing bad would happen.

After a week of being driving the car, the one with the problem, I had the time to go back to the dealer, (Saturday 03/09/02) and as they had said a week before, they do have a car same color, same features, same price as the one I had. After redoing some paper work and waiting a couple of hour for the car to get clean , I was able to drive away with my dreamed Jetta 2002. The car was exactly the same as the one I had, it also had the same problem that the other one. I was mad, really mad.

On Sunday (03/10/02) I went back to the dealer, I was completely disappointed. A week after I got the car and after all I went through I was right at the same point again. I had a 19000 dollar car with a transmission problem and I was facing to loose me next work day because I was not going to drive another 100 miles risking my life to go to work in a car with transmission problems. As the first time, the started trying to convince me that the problem could be fixed, that was something really easy to solve, just loading a new software. They said that all the problem was caused for a bug in the code, that it would be a piece of cake to get the car functioning in the way it was supposed to. How I was going to believe these guys, they sold me a car with a problem without telling me, they replace it for a second car with the same problem without telling me, they put my life in risk. How I was going to believe them, their credibility was less than 0. Besides I did not wanted a fixed car, I wanted a NEW car with out any problems, how I was going to believe that they could fix the problem and the problem was going to go away forever, what if I was going to deal with the problem every two days, or two weeks or two months for the next 3 years. At that point I did not want the car anymore, not the one in front of me, no any of the other ones in the yard. I wanted to get out of the problem once and for all, and terminate what was suppose to be a pleasant experience turned into a nightmare.

When I told them that I did not want the car anymore, they said that I had signed for the car already, that the car was mine and that with problems or not I was stuck with the car for the next 3 years, incredible uh? But true. They also said that the had just receive a new updated version of the software that was supposed to fix the problem and if I wanted they would load it in for me on Monday, they said that they got the new software on Friday, if I picked up my car on Saturday and fixing the problem was as easy as they said, why did not they load the program as a prevention, just in case the car had the same problem that the first one I had, incredible uh? But true.

Sad and dissatisfied, I went home and again started praying not to harm anyone or myself with the NEW car. I also decided I am going to fight as hard as I can to let everyone knows what is happening to me, how Volkswagen is doing business, how things like this can happen after all the previous problems with Firestone and Ford. Does anyone needs to get badly injured or be killed so people realize there is a problem, I don't think this is the best way to do it.

On Monday 03/11/02 between 9.00 am and 10.00 pm, before faxing this letter I called Volkswagen Customer Care Center, and talked with one of Volkswagen advocates about the problem I was going through. One more time I was in for another big surprise, she said she, nor Volkswagen had any previous knowledge or were aware about any problems with the Jetta 2002 model. She said open a case (case number 20071266) for me and said she will call the dealership Classic Volkswagen and will find out more information about the situation. At 4.16 pm Monday 03/11/02 have not heard from the advocate yet.
