Citibank, like much of corporate America, apparently no longer has any regard or respect for its customers.

The Citi Cards division has been outsourcing various so-called credit protection and monitoring services to a company known as Trilegiant (you might recognize the name "PrivacyGuard"). An aggressive, hard-selling, telemarketer-like Citibank customer-service representative got me to acquiesce to a "free trial period" of PrivacyGuard by talking-talking-talking-talking at me until I gave in (and even after I gave in SHE JUST WOULDN'T FREAKING *SHUT* *UP*!!), and supposedly I could cancel after the end of the trial period, right?

Wrong! I called up PrivacyGuard, gave them my member-number, and supposedly I had cancelled my account with them, but on my most recent Citi Cards billing statement, posted two weeks after my cancellation, PG's usual ten-dollar-a-month charge appeared. I actually pretty much knew this would be the case when I read the complaints on this very site about Trilegiant, their crooked parent company, fraudulently billing people's credit cards and failing to comply with cancellation demands.

I called Citibank, and of course, they claimed they could do nothing about it. They are supposed to help you dispute charges for services you have cancelled if you continue to be billed for said services, so I am inclined to think that it is more than a case of Citibank ignorantly outsourcing to a company whose practices have been questionable. It is my opinion that Citibank and other credit card companies that contract with Triglegiant are knowingly complicit in the scam.

And even if Citibank was simply ignorant of Trilegiant's sleazy and evil practices, then what does that say about Citibank that they wouldn't research the history of a company whose "services" they were planning on aggressively ramming down their customers' throats? I may well end up transferring my balance to an entirely different credit card for this unforgivable outrage.

I worked for trilegiant for over a year and many of you i probably spoke to several times while you cursed me up wall and back down. the question i have for all of you is how information can come to you in the mail that tells you the name of the product, how long your "trial Period" is for, the number to contact to cancel or for any questions you may have, as well as the price of the product and sometime depending on your solicitation WHAT CREDIT CARD you will be billed to . COME ON AMERICA. we are so quick to place the blame because we screwed up and don't want to admit to it. several of you even admit once you shut up and stopped screaming that you remember exactly how you signed up you just FORGOT. now was that my fault you saw something for FREE signed up, gave your credit card information and when you get a bill say "oh crap, that trial IS up. Well i'll just call and say I NEVER GAVE YOU MY INFORMATION, i want my money back to Save Face?" stop being babies and stand up for your own actions you go around acting like your so rich but when your account is overdrawn or over-limit you want someone else to blame because of your own stupidity. you put your information there not us. and another thing READ YOUR DARN STATEMENTS. nothing would be such a shock if you read your bill, so if by mistake you are billed you can call to cancel then not 4 years later when your retired and on a fixed income AND THEN DECIDE TO READ YOUR BILL. IF THE ELECTRIC COMPANY JUST TACKED ON 120 TO A BILL WOULD YOU NOT LOOK CLOSELY TO SEE WHAT IT'S FOR OR TO QUESTION IT. MOST OF YOU CHARGE SO MUCH THAT IF THE AMOUNT IS CLOSE TO WHAT YOU CHARGED YOU PAY WITHOUT LOOKING.Must be nice to just say "huh, looks close enough" and just write a check. if you don't have money to just give away be aware of where the heck your money goes. get a backbone, say no, and stop being so desperate that despite the 4 inch paragraph on the back of the check you cash it because your broke. so complain all you want but when you have 2-4 page letters sent with ALL the information you could possibly need about the services, "YOU HAVE NO ONE TO BLAME BUT YOURSELF" And one other helpful hint to all of the idiots with credit cards when we tell you the next one to two billing statements that is because your billing is a month behind. do you really think your january 20 th statement has charges up to january 20 hell no. if you don't know how to read a statement or be aware of what goes on in your life get rid of the plastic, stop spending money you know you don't have, and go back to cash. "if you gave us 10/month by check then needed diapers for your kid the next month, would you still say we stole from you? either way you look at it, you signed it you authorized it.

Well, even though filing a complaint with the State of Wisconsin consumer protection department resulted in my becoming free of PrivacyGuard, CitiSkank was kind enough to sign me up for another Trilegiant "service" without my knowledge. I now have to write to Trilegiant before the deadline in order to avoid being smacked with a three-year fee of almost $60. And it wouldn't surprise me if I have to have another go-round of contacting the consumer protection people to put a stop to this. Citibank has become just plain dag-nasty, black-candle-burning, swastika-armband-wearing *evil*!

I know - I'm sure the rep will just try to blow me off again.

I'm just hoping that when I say in my letter to Trilegiant that Citibank will keep cancelling as long as I keep disputing, that will make them see the wisdom of honoring my cancel request. If I go the route you suggest, I'll be sure and ask the Citibank rep to let me talk to a manager, because I'm sure the rep will just try to blow me off again.

I worked for citi cust serv very briefly - you were talking to a telemarketer, sales first service later for them. not a good job. your situation is pretty common - the people at triligient get paid for convincing people who call to cancel to keep the program, so they'll say they canceled you but really didn't. when you called citi back to dispute, they automatically settled your dispute because it was just under ten dollars, so they never talked to triligient at all, so unless you talked to triligient again they'll keep billing. either call triligient and get a cancellation number, or call citi and ask them to help you cancel it. they can - there's an 800 number they can call. sometimes they will transfer you after telling the rep you want to cancel, or the 800 number will have them cancel you through an automated system or the triligient rep will go ahead and cancel with the citi rep, and then the citi rep should just come back to you with the cance number. good luck.

....but all things considered, perhaps it's way past time to admit it with everything we've seen these past five years. Three elections in a row stolen through jury-rigged electronic voting and assorted political skullduggery. A law passed by Congress that guts our civil liberties, and the august legislators who passed the bill didn't even bother reading it before voting on it. A war started because of "weapons of mass destruction" that didn't even exist. And just these past few months, the Class Action "Fairness" Act and bankruptcy (screw the middle and working classes while protecting the rich) "reform". And all this at the behest of the same corporate hacks who bring us these fraudulent billing scams. At any rate, I just thought I should at least acknowledge the fact that Citibank seems to be willing to reverse the individual charges as long as I continue to dispute them. I'm hoping that will give me some leverage. Even if it doesn't, I remain willing to go as far as I need to go to stop these Trilegiant parasites from robbing me.

Harsh? Are you kidding me? Isn't Citibank the one that set you up with this fake billing scam to begin with?

What do you call a company that offers you a free trial, and then goes right ahead and starts billing you $120 a year? And, what do you call a company that calls you up and hooks you up with this s**t? What do you think, they don't know what's going on? This is corporate America, folks. Forget good value. Forget good business. Forget old-fashioned ethics. That's all ancient history. Maybe your grandfather did business like that. Talk to him. Today, it's all about the benjamins! And, what better way to make a buck than by just reaching out and taking it? No different than a street mugging. I got your god-damned money, now what are you going to do about it, punk? Why am I surprised? After all, this comes from a bank! You don't get to be number one by being mr nice guy, do you?

I may have been a bit harsh on Citibank.

I disputed this specific charge along with my last payment, and it was reversed, but of course, PrivacyGuard's charge showed up again, which I will dispute again. I will also write to Trilegiant informing them that Citibank is co-operating with my disputing their charges, and it would be in everyone's best interests if Trilegiant just cancelled my account as I told them to do. I have also contacted the department in the Wisconsin state government that deals with consumer protection, and they have informed me that they also are contacting Trilegiant about this matter.
