Laptop Warranty is an expensive Ripoff, Don't buy their lies!!! .....

I purchased a Compaq Presario 1710TW Laptop from this Circuit City Store about 14 months ago. Against my better judgement I let the salesman, Mackie, talk me into purchasing a very expensive ($370) four year extended warranty. With my wife listening he told us that the warranty provided complete coverage, no questions asked, no deductables, they fix it, or we get a new computer. A friend of his had just gotten a new computer for just that reason. It was a hard sell and very convincing. Now, my computer has a problem in that it will not charge the battery any longer.

The first thing out of the sales staff mouth was that the battery is not covered, but that they are happy to sell me an new, expensive battery for my computer. I spoke with the manager and told him about the warranty sales pitch but to no avail. The warranty I bought does not cover batteries, damage due to accident or misuse, labor only, all sorts of details that seem to have failed to come up when I was buying the computer.

I plan to follow the route of many of the cheated people who have left their horror reports here. I love to write letters, call news stations, state fraud lines, etc. I have only just begun! Don't buy the warranty!!! It is worthless! If I had kept the money I could buy three new batteries.

I have been contacted via email and told that I can cancel my warranty. No details on whether I will get a refund. Only a fax number, mail address, and email address. So no telling what will happen. I did go to the store and asked to see the warranty details. I was handed a hard copy that has recently become available. I asked for a copy of the warranty that was in effect at the time that I bought the computer and was told that the recent copy is all they ever received, which confirms that all the details were on the receipt (i.e. no small print). T he latest warranty doesn't have very much detail, except that it does exclude consumables (i.e. batteries) and accidents, abuse, cosmetic, and a few other escape clauses. Maybe other have had luck with it, but the more I search, the more complaints and horror stories I find on the web.

You should be able to be refunded some of the warranty. They should refund the time you have left on the warranty if you are unhappy with it, though you should have read or asked for the terms of the warranty. If the store can't help you with the refund then ask for the corp. phone number or cool line phone number.
