..Selling returned and malfunctioning Merchandise AS NEW!

After reading your front page story on the Rip-Off Report, I need to tell you I've had the same experience!

Over a 2 year period I bought computers, printers, a scanner

and even a video camera and realized most of these items came from a box that seemed to be re-taped.

My IBM computer, HP Scanner, Brother fax Machine, & JCV

Video camera all had to be returned because they were

malfunctioning. Circuit City tried to insist that I should call the manufacture! I insisted they take it back!

Not at first did I realize, that when I had originally opened the boxes back then I had said to my girlfriend, "this stuff

seems like it was re packed or had been opened" hmmm?

This happened to me with several Circuit City stores in California.

Buyers beware!

Cheating customers, lazy clerks and rogue managers

#2Consumer Suggestion

Sun, January 26, 2003

The trouble with customer service is that the customer is always righteven when you have reason to believe they arent. Circuit City, Best Buy, Office Depot and other stores that sell high-end electronics are targets for cons and schemers. Smart fraudsters will purchase an item that they already have at home that may be broken or needs an upgrade. They buy a new item, take it home, replace the new item with the old item and re-tape and staple the box then they refund it. Most re-boxers are so good at the repackaging that even the original manufacturer wouldnt know it had been opened. The store employees typically dont open a box thats not been openedfraudsters know this. These items are refunded under the guise of I bought the wrong one or I received it as a gift. Then you have the lazy clerks who dont check the boxes of the ones that have been opened. This is how used goods make it to the honest consumers. The Circuit City Manager who posted here says it would never happen in his store, I believe that. The EDitor insinuates a nationwide problemmaybe, but most likely its the scenarios I gave. Individualsnot corporations, generally set unspoken rules. The trial attorneys would love for us all to be conspiracy theoristsmore money for the trial attorneys, and consumers still get screwed. I doubt the Circuit City home office has issued this secret unspoken rule. What I do believe is that some customers have cheated the stores, some lazy employees have failed to perform and some rogue managers arent doing right. The thing about reselling damaged goods is that it makes for bad press. Purchase used goods from Circuit City? Go to the Circuit City website and write a complaint about the store and question that stores performance. Demand a gift certificate for your troubles and tell your friends to have the clerks open the box for you before purchase at that store. Thanks for the alertIll be sure to check the product. TFC

That is totally not true, it is easier to send the item back to the company then re-sell it. I don't know where you got your info, but it is it not true.

I can only speak for the 2 stores that I have worked

It was sent by Carrie at [email protected]. Circuit City Ripped me off too ..Selling returned and malfunctioning Merchandise AS NEW! (#432) Circuit City Stores (Audio & Electronics Shops) 5/24/99 (Last Modified: 5/24/99) They filed the following rebuttal to the above Rip-Off Report: ............................................ Rebuttal: I am a current Circuit City employee and I would like to respond to the letters about defective merchandise being resold. I can't speak for every single employee within the company, but in my store, this will NEVER happen. We are trained to take ANY returned merchandise out of the box at the time of return. Unless the manufacture's seal is not broken, the item is returned Open Box and sold for a lower price, or it is defective and sent back to the manufacturer or the service center. As I said, I can only speak for the 2 stores that I have worked in for the past 3 years, but we have never and will never resell defective merchandise. It would be silly, we know that it would be returned as soon as the customer tried to use it, so why would we want to deal with an extra return?! .........Rip-off Report EDITORS NOTE: That's right Carrie, all you can speak for are the 2 stores you are in charge of. Your full of it! We have written testimony from employees that say, this is an unwritten policy for store managers and that it's easier for you (Circuit City Managers) to dump the product on the consumer and let the defective merchandise be taken care of through the manufacture or their warrantee so Circuit City does not have to send it back or sell it at a discount. There is so much testimony from so many others right here on the Rip-off Rpeort.
